A rocket fired from Egypt’s Sinai desert hit a southern Israeli resort city early Thursday, raising new concerns about militant activity in the mountainous peninsula.
No injuries were reported in the overnight strike against Eilat, a normally tranquil Red Sea vacation spot. Eilat is set to welcome thousands of visitors this weekend for the Passover holiday.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Israel has been warning of growing lawlessness in Sinai following the Egyptian uprising last year that overthrew Hosni Mubarak’s regime.
Eilat Mayor Meir Yitzhak-Halevy said Thursday morning that his city will function as normal despite the attack.
Rabbi Mendy Klein, Director of the Chabad center in Eilat, said he was “continuing our plans to hold 4 communal Pesach seders here and as of now, no one has cancelled their participation.”
Klein told COLlive.com that following Pesach, he will drum up the campaigns to put on Tefillin, hang a Mezuzah in homes and sign up children for the Sefer Torah “which is known as a segulah for safety and security.”
