After months of being confined at home, away from their classrooms and no playdates with friends, children of all ages are really looking forward to summer camps. Yet it isn’t clear yet whether that will happen.
“You can only open if they allow you to,” one camp director told COLlive.com on Monday. As of now, the person said, no notification was received as to when camps will be allowed to open as the US continues to battle the COVID-19 virus.
A team of government officials — led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — is working on a public health strategy to combat coronavirus while reopening parts of the country, The Washington Post reported.
The CDC said that unlike many other amusement venues, summer camps will be considered “essential businesses,” and this past Thursday, the White House specifically included camp in phase two of its reopening guidelines.
The final decision, however, will be up to the local and federal governments. In New York’s Catskills, some 90 camps are located in Sullivan County, while another 30 camps operate in Ulster County.
A source told COLlive that some camps in Sullivan County have received permit applications to open this summer, but there is still no indication as to whether they will be granted to applying camps.
Rabbi Hachoch Hecht, Assistant Administrator of Camp Emunah for girls, says they are waiting to receive the permits to fill out, but are making sure everything is set in place to open as scheduled. The first session is set to begin Tuesday, June 30 (8th of Tamuz) and the second session on Tuesday, July 28 (7th of Av).
“We are operating in anticipation of camp opening on time, and working with local government officials,” Rabbi Hecht told COLlive.com about the work being done on the campgrounds in Greenfield Park, NY and in the administration office in Brooklyn. “We are continuing full force with our plans.”
But another camp director warned that even if a general green light is given to open camps this summer, it remains to be seen what health regulations and restrictions will be imposed to avoid the spread of the virus.
“If they say we can open but they make restrictions in a way that you can’t really comply and won’t be reasonable, that won’t help anyone,” he told COLlive.com on Monday. “If they say you have to have a certain amount of social distancing and you can only have a few kids in a bunk – how do you pick who goes and who doesn’t go to camp?”
Camp Chayolei Director Shloime Rutman said he is in touch with local government authorities regarding the upcoming season. “Barring any unexpected changes, we should be able to have everything ready in time,” he told COLlive.com.
“We also are making contingency plans for exciting on-site in house entertainment to replace any scheduled trips out of camp that may not be open,” he said.
He said that in the event that the camp cannot open due to government or medical restrictions, Chayolei will be fully refunding parents.
In a message to camp directors, the American Camp Association said: “You are no doubt used to dealing with both the expected and unexpected challenges that come with running a camp; coronavirus is no different. Continue to check in with your local health authorities and monitor the CDC resources on ACA’s coronavirus page to ensure you have the most up-to-date information.
They said “both viruses and guidance for dealing with them can change over time” and recommended to “keep your camp families and staff in the loop on all your health and safety-related efforts at camp; this is the best way to alleviate fears and to do your best to ensure that everyone has a safe and enriching camp experience this summer.”
I think this subject is on most parent’s mind now. Please keep us updated when you know
We are already financially strapped and camp is one more burden we cannot afford.
“If they say we can open but they make restrictions in a way that you can’t really comply and won’t be reasonable, that won’t help anyone,”
This unfortunately seals the deal. Is there a plan b in the works for local day camps? I think we will go crazy if children can’t get out at least locally this summer.
Camp in Yerushalayim!
Moshiach Now!!!
Chayolei camp might have an advantage that located in PA & not in N.Y.
That might mean that they will end up taking the overflow if (c”v) some camps don’t open. The question is how many more kids they’ll be able to accomodate more than their usual. It might pay to sign your kids up now..
PA is not interested in importing an influx of cases from NYC
Many staff and campers come from out of state ie New York so thatay be a issue
The kids are coming from N.Y.
PA canceled the school year before NY. They may have more restrictions.
NY wants to get back to normal. I think NY will be more favorable
Best camp!
I’ve been sending my kids to chayolie for the past few year’s and they’ve really enjoyed!
I’m glad they have a chance to join for another summer…
What about to the Canadian camps (gan yisrol Montreal, gan yisroel Toronto, pardas chana) that get most of their campers from the us. As of now the border is closed… Even if the camps can open if the border dosent than no one can go…
camps might have to solely service those in their country or state
I lived and breathed for camp my whole life. I’m hoping something will be arranged for the kids to make summer the best in fun and enriched in chassidishkeit. It has a power to transform lives.
and we can use whatever we face, including these challenges, to transform, as well.
What about YSP? We can’t miss it this year! If we miss it, there’s no second chance, no going back!
Shloime and rabbi spritzer are special people . One summer evening I noticed a lonely boy coming to shteibel each evening . After finding details he was not in day camp either . They made sure that this boy would come to camp even though it was half into the season.
It seems they will be confined for two months to one grounds the only problem would be going on trips
Exactly the safest place for our children and for their parents is in camp.
They are quarantined in the grounds and they don’t go home to their parents at night so they can’t infect the parents or grandparents.
That’s a good point!! Also, I am confident that kids that stay home all summer will drive there parents up a wall!!
Play dates are forbidden. Libraries are closed. Park facilities are prohibited. But camp (day or over night)…uh, let’s think a minute…maybe that be ok?! Wishful thinking of parents going insane.
Camp is the best thing you can do, you’re essentially quarantining all the kids (who are basically immune) and keeping them from spreading it to anyone else. Just cancel visiting day and you’re done
Best thing to do is get the kids out the city for the summer
If schools are closed so will camps be. “Essential business ” is for schools as well and yet schools are closed.I’ll be very shocked if there will be camp/day camp for first half. Maybe, a big maybe for second half. As for Canadian camps – the borders are still closed so no Americans can go.
Schools are closed now.
Yes, if camps were now, they would be closed. But things can change in 2 months
This is one guy that keeps it real… Hope everything works out
Year round residents of the Catskills fear the influx of campers this summer. Please keep your kids safe and ours too. STAY HOME
“We also are making contingency plans for exciting on-site in house entertainment to replace any scheduled trips out of camp that may not be open,” he said. When I was growing up in the late ’60s and ’70s, being away at overnight camp in the country WAS the “trip” and we did virtually everything there on the camp grounds. Maybe once in a while, instead of a trail hike, we walked as a group to the nearest store offgrounds, to get soda or candy or just a change in scenery. I still don’t “get” why they still need numerous “trips”… Read more »
Things aren’t the way they were in 60’s and 70’s trips ARE an essential part of camp depriving the kids of them won’t teach them anything although it will be a living hell for staff
They are taking things in right path. They sent out a rlly nice email telling everyone tht they are preparing their grounds as usual. Keep it up!!!
Since most schools do not look like they will be reopening this year, maybe overnight camps should open a month early, 3 months of camp this summer with perhaps more serious “school like” learning the first month.
It would be great to get an update on this article. Did any camps get their permits? Any particular camp opening? Any particular camp not opening?
Thanks
