Situated on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street – midway between Times Square and Grand Central Terminal – the sukkah is is a magnet for the thousands of passersby every day.
The lushly planted large wooden sukkah – decked with abundant cedar and bittersweet berry “schach” greenery – stands out in sharp relief against the white marble of the Beaux Arts New York Public Library. A steady stream of tourists, business people from surrounding office towers, Chol Hamoed trippers, and locals stop by.
People come in to make the blessings on the Lulav, enjoy a customary holiday meal and make the “Leshev BaSukkah” blessing. Some stop by just to revel in this charmingly outfitted al fresco booth.
Local residents who lack outdoor space at their city apartments rely on this Sukkah as a haven in which to celebrate the festival.
For sixteen years, Rabbi Yehoshua Metzger and Brocha Chana Metzger of Chabad Midtown have organized the construction of the Sukkah. The Sukkah is directly across Fifth Avenue from the recently purchased home of Chabad of Midtown at 509 Fifth Avenue.

An incredible boy, from an incredible family who are dedicated to the Rebbe’s work. The Chabad world is cheering you all on
I am a special education teacher in midtown at a non Jewish private school. Today I took my students on a community walk to Maddison Square Park and Chabad of Midtown had a sukkah set up there too! Most of my students ventured in the sukkah and my two Jewish students (as well as several of my Jewish co-workers) got to shake the lulav! When I told one of the student’s parents she was thrilled! Her son loves the sukkah but they did not get a chance to take him there this year! Kol HaKavod Chabad of Midtown!
well done!!
rabbi, you do a heck of a lot Judaism!
Rabbi and Mrs. Metzger greet each person with a smile. This is their Chabad House for Chol Hamoed. I make it a point to visit every Sukkos. It’s a highlight for us.
