“…Make sacred Garments for Aharon… for his honor and splendor”
The crowning jewel of this splendid outfit is the Choshen!
And yes, I made it into a challah. Of course.
Worn over the heart of the Kohen Gadol, each precious stone represents a tribe in Israel.
“And Aharon shall carry the names of Yisrael’s sons on the Choshen Mishpat, on his heart….”
In an era in which fair and loving leadership seems nonexistent, here is a shining example of how a leader must be.
The Kohen Gadol carried the names of each tribe on his heart, each one represented by a precious stone, showcasing each tribe’s unique qualities and contributions to the whole.
On a piece of parchment the names of Hashem are inscribed and tucked deep inside the whole thing, and this is how a leader is able to fairly judge and truthfully direct his people.
For those of us who are raised with the Rebbe we know what this kind of leadership looks like firsthand. When a woman asked the Rebbe how he had the strength to stand on his feet for hours during “dollars”- the Rebbe answered “when you’re counting diamonds you don’t get tired.”
This is the leader we look to in our lives.
As mothers, leaders of our own little tribes and high priestesses of our homes, we are entrusted with the task of fairly and lovingly guiding our family in the ways of Torah and Chassidus. We are the leaders the world needs right now.
The choshen Mishpat remains for us a shining example. Wear the names of your people on your heart, remember that each jewel shines differently but equally bright. And remember that behind them all is the Divine.
When we approach our loved ones this way, the truth will shine forth, each stone lighting up in it’s time, just as it was illuminated for Aharon HaKohen who wore the Choshen first.
Dear friends, nurturers, mediators, loving guides and truthful judges, let us be the leaders the world needs now.
