The article says “more than 600,000 Hebrew characters” –characters are LETTERS, not words. So this is correct according to any calculation.

its a know that the word yisroel is an acrynym for Yesh Shishim Ribui Osios Latorah – that there are 600,000 letters in a torah. The only thing is that only abt 304,000 are begilui. so my guess is that the author asked how many letters there are and he got an answer….
