Chabad of Talbiya- Mamilla’s 11th annual 19 Kislev celebration in Jerusalem unfolded as a miraculous evening of spiritual rejuvenation, overcoming immense challenges posed by the ongoing war and amid the around-the-clock support for the evacuated families.
The decision to organize the program was sparked by a dream that occurred to one of the family members of the Shluchim Rabbi Eliyahu and Chanale Canterman of Chabad of Talbiya on a Tuesday night. In the dream, the Alter Rebbe appeared with a questioning gesture as to why the annual event had been canceled this year, indicating that this would be the year that the light needed to be doubled and tripled. The message seemed to emphasize the importance and urgency of planning a 19 Kislev, despite the fact that there were three days in which to arrange it and the Great Synagogue had officially closed their doors to any large-scale event. This mystical encounter set the wheels in motion for a rapid and unprecedented organization.
Despite the typical timeline of 4-6 weeks required for such events, the community rallied together in an astonishing display of unity. Flyers were created, the venue secured, musicians were booked, and a speaker was confirmed—all within a single day. Surprisingly, the Great Synagogue, which had initially declined hosting large events, made an exception due to the short ceasefire, offering their space for the occasion.
The featured speaker, Rabbi Yitzchok Schochet from the Mill Hill Synagogue in London, UK, flew in despite being only two weeks post-surgery, driven by a profound desire to contribute more to Israel. The guest of honor, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, former Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel and a renowned Holocaust survivor, made a rare public appearance, adding to the exceptional lineup.
The music for the evening was provided by the Hershtik family, relatives of Rabbi Schochet, who happened to be available for the event. Unbeknownst to the organizers, Rabbi Schochet’s mother is a first cousin to the Hershtiks, creating an unexpectedly beautiful connection.
Despite a limited three-day window for publicity, the response was overwhelming. With 30 sign-ups on the first day, doubts arose about the event’s success. However, as Sunday night unfolded, close to 400 people gathered for the celebration, surpassing expectations and filling the venue with unprecedented energy.
Udi Hirschler, the evening’s MC, masterfully kept the evening flowing, firing up the crowd with an energy of positivity, prayer and hope.
Rabbi Schochet held an enrapt audience for a full 45 mins, weaving Torah. Chassidut and current events into one perfect blend that left the crowd stunned, empowered and uplifted. His message of Emuna, Achdus and of Ahavat Yisrael was unequivocal and crystal clear. The clips below will demonstrate just how.
Rabbi Lau’s speech resonated deeply with the attendees, leading to spontaneous dancing and an overwhelming sense of spiritual connection. The event was described as a profound experience, with participants expressing gratitude for the much-needed Chasidic inspiration. A Rebbe dollar was auctioned, adding additional koach to the evening. which was dedicated in loving memory of Edna – Esther Cohen Bas R’ Eliyahu and Hachaver Yaakov Ben Hachaver Moshe, Z”L.
In retrospect, it became evident that the Alter Rebbe’s spiritual presence had guided the event, bringing light and rejuvenation to a community in need. The video footage below encapsulates the essence of the night, showcasing the spiritual, uplifting, and empowering atmosphere that prevailed throughout Yud Tet Kislev 5784 in Jerusalem.
