A crowd of well over 100 gathered Sunday in Sparta, NJ to celebrate the dedication of a new Sefer Torah. The Torah was donated to Chabad of Sussex County by the Weintraub and Lewis families (Sparta / NYC).
Among the distinguished guests were Rabbi Moshe Herson, Dean of the Rabbinical College of America, and Mr. Gilbert Gibbs, Mayor of Sparta.
The last letters in the Torah were finished by the sponsors, and a silver crown was placed on it by the Herrick family. The Torah was then paraded up Woodport Rd to Chabad under a canopy, accompanied by torch-bearers and a beautiful float playing lively music. At Chabad, an inaugural service took place followed by a celebratory lunch.
The event was exhilarating and unique to all who participated. “I thank you for inviting me here,” said Sparta’s Mayor, “this has been a most joyous and memorable occasion.” The Torah will be kept in an “ark” newly build for the occasion, donated by Mrs. Maureen Miller.
