It may be a long week with the in-laws, a bad day at work or even a memory from a particularly trying time in your life. We all have those trigger situations that send us spiraling towards negativity.
We spend decades of schooling expanding our minds and discovering new vistas of learning. But how much effort do we put into developing and fine-tuning our emotions by seeking to set and maintain healthy thought patterns? Wouldn’t it be nice if we could learn how to redirect and channel our thoughts to remain positive and in control, even when coming face to face with life’s challenges?
The Torah teaches us that emotional regulation—and the mindful happiness that follows—can be learned and even mastered.
Rochel Holzkenner, a renowned Chabad.org columnist and Chabad Shlucha in Las Olas, Florida, will be teaching how to do just that in a new course titled “Finding Balance.”
“Our thoughts are constant and persistent,” says Holzkenner, who holds an MS in Brain Research Education from Nova SE University and teaches in the Rohr Bais Chaya High School and the Chaya Aydel Seminary in Florida.
“Some thought patterns are so ingrained in our mind that we aren’t always conscious of them. When they are self-destructive and disempowering, we breed toxic emotions.”
“Self-awareness is the first step in recognizing our thought patterns, as well as rerouting the ones that are not conducive to our physical and spiritual well-being,” she continues. “Training our mind to think thoughts that are healthy for the soul is a lifelong endeavor and life-changing pursuit.”
In this four-part course, Holzkenner will explore some classic Torah thoughts about these feelings, and the thought patterns that create and reinforce them.
The sessions also tackles the human tendency to judge other people harshly, with several methods of undoing our judgmental tendencies.
“If you have emotions, then this course is for you,” quips Rabbi Zalman Refson, who produced the course for Chabad.org.
The free course will air on four consecutive Mondays, from May 8 to May 29. As with all Chabad.org courses, participants will be supplied with source sheets, quizzes, access to discussion boards and an opportunity to interact directly with the presenter.
