As part of a campaign to raise funds to rebuild the mikvah in Brighton, England, over 30 ladies including one in a wheelchair attended a Moonlight Walk along the seafront promenade this past Motzoei Shabbos.
Before the walk havdalah was recited by the Shliach Rabbi Pesach Efune with the aid of a blow torch to get the havdalah candle lit in the particularly windy weather.
Enthusiastic and energetic women of all ages and from all different spectrum’s of the Jewish community followed the luminous full moon, the crashing waves and of course the wind (but no rain) and the walk began.
When Rabbi and Mrs. Efune first arrived in Brighton on shlichus 24 years ago there was a functioning mikvah in the town, housed in the local swimming complex.
This strange situation came about years ago due to the intervention of the then local rabbi who convinced city authorities to build one, arguing that it would attract more tourists to the town, and it certainly did.
Unfortunately, due to new health and safety regulations within the swimming complex, the authorities closed it 6 years ago and since then the town has been without and kosher mikvah.
When Mrs. Penina Efune turned 50 earlier this year, she made a birthday hachlota to commit herself to the building of a mikvah in Brighton and she, her husband and other local rabbis have embarked to raise the necessary funds needed to complete this project.
To this end, together with a dedicated team of ladies, they managed to pull off this successful event and together raised over £2,200.
“There still is a long way to go but the next fundraising event is already in the pipeline, so with Hashem and the Rebbe’s help there undoubtedly will be a Mikva in Brighton hopefully very soon,” the Efunes said.
