Cape Town, South Africa has been blessed with the Rebbe’s Shluchim for close to 35 years, under the leadership of Rabbis Mendel and Avi Popack.
This week, Chabad Lubavitch of the Cape is playing host to an honored leading figure of the Chabad movement who will be visiting the Chabad institutions and delivering an address to the wider community on the attack in Washington D.C. at the prestigious Investec Bank overlooking the Cape Town harbour.
Rabbi Avraham Shemtov, appointed by the Rebbe as Chairman of the executive board of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, the umbrella organization of Chabad Lubavitch, plays a leading role in the activities of Lubavitch International Headquarters as well his ongoing involvement with the Shluchim “out in the field.”
Coming from such a position, Rabbi Shemtov’s talk promises to be a source of inspiration and comfort in these troubling times, during his first visit to South Africa and Cape Town in particular.
As “the Rebbe’s man in the White House” who had a very close relationship with Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagen, George Bush (jr and snr) and Bill Clinton, his intimate knowledge and decades of experience for life in Washington D.C. provides him with a unique perspective on the role of the Jewish People in the broader society – in good times, and sadly tragic.
Michael Bagraim, national president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies will give greetings at the event on behalf of the community and introduce Rabbi Shemtov.
In a press release, Rabbi Asher Deren, Director Chabad of the West Coast in Bloubergrant, welcomed Shemtov’s “historic visit to Cape Town.”
Due to tight security measures, attendance to this event is only via RSVP to reception@chabad.co.za. or 021 434 3740. Please provide the names of any guests who will be coming with you.
Quick work! Rabbi Popack and crew run a truly professional show in capetown.

looking forward
