Chaya Schochet, the owner of Brooklyn Wigs in Crown Heights, has been a seasoned expert in sheitel services for over a decade to individuals who sought specialized care for their wigs. She has just launched an exciting new Chessed initiative to help those struggling to afford proper sheitel care.
“When I was just 8 years old, I was already helping my mother who owned a sheitel salon in Toronto,” Schochet told COLlive. “With the help of generous matchers, I can now offer a subsidized package for sheitel care for the Crown Heights community that has become my family and home over the last ten years.”
She also highlights the soaring prices of wigs in recent years, making it unaffordable for most women in the community to care for their wigs properly.
Brooklyn Wigs is on a mission to provide top-tier sheitel services at subsidized pricing, ensuring that every woman can afford the care her wig deserves. They offer specialized care, including deep hydration, detangling without causing hair damage, and treatments to enhance hair movement and shine – all at no additional cost. Their commitment to using only luxury hair products mirrors their aspiration to create a 5-star spa-like Mikvah experience for women to embrace the mitzvah of tznius and hair covering.
Schochet explains why she felt there was a need for this initiative. “Today there are organizations helping to subsidize the cost of going to the Mikvah, groceries for those in need, and more. Making sure women who can’t afford expensive wig care are able to feel good in their devotion to this Mitzvah should also have this option,” she says.
Schochet’s motivation for this endeavor stems from the Rebbe’s blessing and vision for making sheitels accessible to all women. “Before sheitels became accessible for all women, the Rebbe gave money to women to purchase sheitels. We’re now back to a point where even sheitel care is unaffordable and inaccessible for some women. This cannot be allowed to continue. So we’re making sure that carrying on the Rebbe’s wishes, every woman can afford her sheitel care,” explains Schochet.
Brooklyn Wigs offers first-class, premium quality sheitel care for $35, half the standard cost in Crown Heights, which has risen significantly to an astonishing $60-70 per wash and set. Moreover, they stand by the quality of their work, assuring customers with a satisfaction guarantee – they will redo the sheitel for free if the client is unsatisfied (conditions apply).
Looking to the future, Brooklyn Wigs has exciting plans to expand its offerings. They aim to provide subsidized premium sheitels, allowing every woman to own several beautiful wigs.
Additionally, they plan to extend their services to offer full lifetime care of wigs, including repairs and coloring. The salon will also accommodate busy wives and mothers with pick-up and delivery services throughout Crown Heights.
Brooklyn Wigs welcomes anyone to benefit from their subsidized deal, not just the Crown Heights community. They extend their services to people throughout New York, shluchos, and any Jewish woman visiting Brooklyn.
While their primary focus remains on sheitels, Brooklyn Wigs is willing to make exceptions and offer hair care services for special occasions such as bas mitzvahs, weddings, mikvah nights, and shidduch dates.
“Our goal is not to put other sheitel machers out of business – we’re just offering lower than standard prices because it’s become unaffordable for some women to care for their sheitels,” assures Schochet emphasizing their goal to create a positive impact in the community.
With a mission inspired by the Rebbe’s bracha and a vision to make sheitels accessible and affordable to all, Brooklyn Wigs has become a beacon of hope for countless women, ensuring they can embrace the mitzvah of hair covering with ease and grace.

To support the cause, donations can be sent to Brooklyn Wigs via PayPal, CashApp, or Zelle to Brooklynwigs@gmail.com or 347 261 0982.

Thank you Chaya for just being a real mentch and not praying on this community. May you have MUCH success!
The Rebbe must be so proud of you. As lubavitcher women this is an expensive horoah of the Rebbe and you have made it more affordable. That’s amazing.
Prices of everything has gone up. If a wig is washed and set properly it will take the artist a long time. Any quality salon charges for their expertise. If someone cannot afford the service, they can learn and do it on their own.
With all due respect I disagree with your attitude. Every woman deserves to have a a basic such as having decent fresh “hair” on their head. Your attitude is not group minded or community oriented. We are not talking about a luxury of a new lace top wig we are talking about a basic that is one of the foundations for every Chabad woman once she gets married. While the mindset of “cant afford it dont have it ” is true for many things it can not be for this. This attitude is also what make many many things unaffordable… Read more »
A shaitel is NOT a luxury item but rather a necessity! I hope you have a bit enough shop that will accommodate all the women who have not been able to afford regular shaitel care up until now!
A shaitel is a necessity item. A $4,000 long hair, lace cap is not a necessity. It’s become a necessity that most of us can’t afford.
Thank you Chaya and you, your family and supporters should be bentched 100 fold
It’s not a simple as that. There are many costs involved with that too
Well I’ve tried to learn many times but I have two left hands when it comes to hair and I can never get my shaitel to look right.
So beautiful!
The almost impossible situation for Lubavitcher women: they are teachers and get paid – if they get paid! – minimally; they need to wear a sheitel every single day for almost all day, the sheitel isn’t like hair, they can’t just take a shower and blow dry it; they can barely afford to clothe their children in shoes, let alone spend the enormous amount of money for their sheitel to look presentable; and they do not want to go to work every day looking like they can’t afford a sheitel wash!
So…be very blessed, Chaya, for this incredible initiative!!
100% . Could not have wrote that better myself
Not just teachers!
it is unpayable to pay 60 or 70 dollars for something that seems basic. imagine in summer where it gets hot and that proce is just too much for the average
I KNOW! I’m in that situation right now. With the heat and muggyness , my sheitel did not last a month and i own a good one from a reputable company that is less than 6 months old ..I can’t afford to pay 2x a month at these prices ! So i just have to keep wearing it another 2 weeks like this .This Is a VERY basic service ! It’s simply too much money for many people and Chaya seems to REALLY care and get this
tichels are expensive too.
Tichels are for the house, and you can use anything
But shaitels are for the public and should look proper
This is so so important! I want to add, in case this helps anyone reading this. You can buy a beautiful wig directly from the manufacturer in China for a fraction of the price! There are a few facebook groups you can join to see more of the process. I got 2 beautiful ones (one $800 the other $500) and I’m so happy with them! (Lace/ processed wigs)

What a magnificent initiative by a beautiful person who comes from an amazing family! Hatzlacha rabah!
Is $70 the norm now in CH? Wow! I live out of town, and I had no idea they were charging so much in CH! Prices went up where I live too, but not like this!!! What a beautiful initiative!
Yes, it’s nuts
Good for you!
Thank you! This has been a long term problem with no viable solution! Given this is a for profit bussiness, the entire situation seemed helpless! I’m a Morah myself . I am so grateful. She left no stone unturned. As it’s not just buying and wash/set were the only costs . Maintenance, repair is extremely important for upkeep which in the long run saves the sheitel along with money. The costs for that were becoming nearly impossible to keep up with. I shed tears over this ! Thank you thank you thank you! I am interested in your services and… Read more »
Can’t believe this hasn’t been done yet. We’ve needed this for ages. Very cool.

Thank u for this amazing initiative! May u have lots of success and brachos.
Ppl stop complaining and comparing and saying inflation! Just acknowledge the beauty of what she is offering.
So so Happy to hear about this!!
It has become unaffordable – and you have Actually done something about it!!!
May You be BLESSED!
And may others follow your example.
With much appreciation:)
Sorry I don’t charge $60-$70 for wash & set. I been doing wash & sets for about 9 yrs And I charge $45-$50, depending on the service. I’m been working very hard on where I am today. And B”H I never got compliments about my price on wash & sets Bh we have alot of hairstylists in ch who does every good on what they do & how much they charge is up to them. P.S. the only time you get $60-$70 wash & set is during the the high holidays for those last minute bookings. I wish you luck… Read more »
Did you offer an discount if 2 were brought in at once? Was the 45 just for an wash and air dry ? 45 is ALOT !
I love in ch and every shop or person I go to charges about 30 or 40.
Mine charged 65 – 75 depending on length. The 40 dollar ones are forshort ones with simple basic styles
They sell discontinued styles that cost over $1500 for as low as $350.
European hair and excellent quality and located in crown hts as well
I too am very happy with my Freeda’s discontinued sale wig.
I see my wig Ty for great service and well done job -c
The cost of “good” sheitels is now obscene. Now a long sheitl costs more than a refrigerator! When I began wearing sheitels a good sheitel cost about the same as having my hair regularly dyed, permed and styled over the course of a year. I bought “top” brands at one time and could easily afford the cost. Since I live where there are no shetelmachers, the person I bought from in NY taught me how to wash my sheitels and sold me ones that I could style myself with rollers and blow dryer. Previous to that I bought synthetics locally and… Read more »
May this endeavor bring you to your bashert now 😊

My husband and I BH make a decent income but even so I only have one Shaitel and have to get it done quickly over the weekend so it’s ready by Sunday night, for work Monday morning. I live in Florida and it’s very muggy and I try to stretch it out between wash and sets so I may get it done every 2-3 months, and I pay $45 down here.
Thank you for making this mitzvah more accessible and doable.
Mrs Inflation:
Some ahavas Yisroel please. We can’t all wash our own. We’re not all so talented. The prices for wash and set are astronomical especially in hot muggy weather when the Sheitel just doesn’t hold for long. If the Sheitel is limp the wearer doesn’t feel proud rather self conscious when going out! Thank you for this chessed I will be going iyh. Where are you located ? Address please? Do appointments run on time? Do you service shorter sheitels too or only long sheitels that the younger clientel wear?
Kol hakavod ! What a zchus you have.
WOW it’s incredible what you are doing. I hope this becomes a world wide idea. Wigs today have become out of reach to buy and care for. A normal thing that the Rebbe request for every woman to wear. A normal thing to walk out the door has become a luxury!! This is so needed. May Hashem bless you ten fold for your work and may you have much success and the women feel beautiful wearing the wigs you set and sell. So beautiful
I wear a short Sheitel and my Sheitel macher charges $65 wash and set off on the day… and it lasts a week!! If I drop it off a day earlier $5 off. I have one Sheitel! Prices are prohibitive… Whwt a chessed. Thank you.
Yes , my shaitel macher charges $65, but I get so much more than a wash and set! I get therapy for life and marriage!! I know someone who got a shidduch for her daughter, through her. I also happen to know that she discounts people who she knows have a hard time and she also has woman who don’t pay at all…she will even color for no charge if she knows they cannot pay! She offers discounts and payment plans on new purchases that make it possible for many who cannot pay, to be able to afford. I’m not… Read more »
I bought a wig four years ago , I am really happy with it and would like to buy another from the same company . The prices have gone up thousands . I cannot afford it now .
I really would love to know why it has gone up so much . We don’t have a choice, we have to do cover our hair.We want to feel good and look good. It is not a luxury, it’s not a designer hand bag . Why has it become a luxury item .
