A main avenue in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights section is slated to be closed for over a year for renovations, COLlive has learned.
New York City’s Department of Transportation is currently reviewing its options for redoing Kingston Avenue, from Eastern Parkway to Empire Boulevard.
“The city hopes to complete the job in approximately 15 to 18 months,” Rabbi Jacob Z. Goldstein, Chairman of Brooklyn’s Community Board 9 – a local governmental body in charge of local infrastructure – said.
“Kingston is in very bad shape,” Goldstein told COLlive. “The sewers are over 100 years old. Below Carroll Street the infrastructure needs to be redone from top to bottom.”
The plan is “no parking on Kingston Avenue, period.” There will be one lane open for through traffic and emergency vehicles.
Pedestrians will be able to walk across the avenue, but are likely to be met with certain restrictions, as well as lots of dust and dirt.
“No pain, no gain,” Goldstein says. “We are not starting just yet. We first have to finish the drawing, then in October 2009 submit the bid and maybe start in March 2010.”
“This won’t be the first for New York City and will not be the last; it’s been done on major streets,” Goldstien, who lives on Montgomery Street, said.
“People visit Crown Heights and see a busted up neighborhood. We need new streets and new gutters, don’t you think?”
We didn’t have to ask what will be with Simchas Beis Hashoeiva…
Hi, bro!
I for one, would rather be inconvenienced greatly with the streets being closed for 18 months, if it means there might not be a simchas beis hashoeiva in the streets of Crown heights. I am a parent in Crown heights , who is terrified for her kids to be a part of what the simchas beis hashoeiva has become. It feels like im fighting an uphill battle .It is high time we re think this whole thing .,so my kids can finally appreciate its’ original intent. My deepest sympathies for the storeowners though, and dont worry, i will still support the… Read more »
About time
why did you take pictures of all the GOOD streets ?
check out on Kingston between Eastern Pkwy and Union the Tracks coming out of the ground
I complaint 1 few weeks ago to 311 and it seems like they r working on it
The next project is to get rid of Most of the street cleaning
thanks
Good shabbos
In such tough financial it makes no snse to even concider such a costly project both for the city and the store owners.
This project will not see any success. And where are they getting the money from? More TAXES
Bloomberg will lose so much money not being able to give tickets on Kingston Ave. any more.
Construction will therefore start only after Bloomberg looses the election.
THIS ALL SOUNDS NICE BUT I THINK THE ENTIRE CH COMMUNITY SHOULD VOTE ON THIS PLAN – WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT ITS GOING TO LOOK LIKE AFTER ITS DONE – ACCORDING TO MR GOLDSTIEN THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE LANE ON KINGSTON FOR CARS AND ONE LANE FOR BIKES – THAT IS CRAZY WE MUST TELL HIM NO WAY!!!
All the stores still going to be open?
I HOPE THEY WILL!!!!!!!!!
When I come to Crown Heights I see the varimkeit amongst chssidim and true simcha among those who walk up the streets. This is truly the Rebbe’s Shchuna. Repairing the roads is one thing, if it makes the place safer. However, an entire makeover is uneccessary. In my opinion it would be a great Kiddush Hashem to take that money and make it be known that the community of the Rebbe’s Shchuna chose to use it to help those families who can use it to make a simcha, schar limud, send a child to camp, extra curricular talent development activities,… Read more »
school bus nightmare here we come!!!!!!!!!!
late for school, work. Now we cant blame to garbage truck for being in our way.
lets start a pettition asking the city to take their plans somewhere else.
have you taken a look at the street around the corner from your own home. Talk about streets in disrepair–
clove road- the only legal way to get to our homes on Malbone Street is still cobble stone. It destorys our cars and is a super eye sore. People dump garbage all along the street and park and block the enterance to Clove. Use your powers and help those who REALLY need the help.
We love crown heights just the way it is.
i don’t get it they don’t have anything els to do with the city’s money, what am i going to do, not only that businesses is slow, soon with out traffic its going to be even slower, what am i or any other store going to do without businesses, just to make Kingston ave to look good? what are you going to do with out store’s on Kingston there is not going to be any store’s left by the time its all done this i think is nuts
Please recommend that they start this AFTER Pesach, which is late March in 2010/
Rabbi Jacob Goldstein.
It’s a great plan and idea to improve Kingston Avenue.
But don’t forget to add benches, so that seniors and mothers with young children can take a rest along the way. Thankyou.
Are they out of their minds! Kingston looks fine to me. This is another way for the city to spend our tax dollars.
i can smell an even greater opportunity for the city to make extra money on poor ppl who need to park and daven. Hey ppl in charge, may suspend another day of alternate side parking one more day a week?
Moshiach will be here way before then
i hope they consider all the businesses on the ave .
we love the streets the way they r we love the streets the rebbe walked on. it would be agreat loss 4 all stores on kingston a great inconvenience 4 all crown heights and guests. this is not the dark ages there are alot better ways to fix broken streets and sewers. dont wory moshiach is coming no need 2 make life so difficult 4 so many mothers babys elders and children……………………………
