The heroic Indian nanny Sandra Samuel will be receiving a prestigious award from the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation on Friday, May 6.
The special ceremony taking place at the Tel-Aviv University will also be commemorating Yom Hashoah.
Samuel saved the life of 2 year-old Moishy Holtzberg in the terrorist attack that took place in Mumbai during November of 2008.
She had been working for Rabbi Gabi Holtzberg and his wife, Rivki, at the Mumbai Chabad House since 2003, being Moishy’s nanny since his birth.
On November 26, 2008, Sandra showed incredible courage rescuing Moishy while the terrorists who took the lives of his parents were still in the building.
Danny Rainer, Vice President of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation will bestow a special distinction to Samuel.
The foundation’s mission is to develop educational programs and public awareness campaigns based on the values of solidarity and civic courage, ethical cornerstones of the Saviors of the Holocaust.
The program will start with a lecture by the internationally acclaimed journalist Henrique Cymerman, and the presentation of the film-interview “Juanito” – the remarkable story of Dr. Zalman Shiffer and his “brother” Juanito.
In 1942 in Belgium, Zalman was given shelter at the house of Louise and Joseph Materne, who had already had a Spanish boy named Juanito – who fled the Spanish Civil War – living at their house.
The film-interview tells the story of these two brothers by accident, and the way this experience has changed their lives forever.
I was so very fortunate that Sandra was nanny to my daughter Diya in the mid 80’s at Navy Nagar. The amazing courage she displayed came as a no surprise to me. She was very caring and selfless person who could be always relied upon to make the right choices. We remember her very fondly and wish her the very best.
