Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, whose fight for justice has united Jews worldwide, has given his first interview to a newspaper since being sentenced to 27 years in prison.
45 members of Congress and 6 former Attorneys General have questioned the handling of the trial of the former manager of a kosher meat packing plant in Postville, Iowa.
In an article published in the expended Sukkos edition of the Mishpacha Magazine, the father of 10 children is quoted saying, “my body isn’t in the right place now, but my soul is not constrained by it.”
Yisroel Besser, Mishpacha’s contributing editor, has paid 3 visits to the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, NY, where Rubashkin is serving. Scheduled date of release: March 6, 2033.
“I felt connected to Reb Sholom Mordechai from the minute I met him that clear summer day four years ago,” Besser says about his initial and previous interview conducted in Rubashkin’s home in Postville.
Besser told COLlive.com he has since felt drawn to Rubashkin, the family and the cause. He attributed his own affinity to Rubashkin to R’ Pinny Lipschutz, editor of the Lakewood-based Yated Neeman weekly who become a close friend and staunch advocate for Rubashkin.
Besser first visit to Otisville was along with Lipschutz, and he recalls listening “in amazement” as the 2 friends — one a talmid of Brisk and the other, a Lubavitcher chossid– speaking “with an understanding of brothers, a bond formed through fire and water- and steel.”
In the second and third visit to the prison, the Canadian-based Besser was accompanied by his father, Rabbi Shlomo Besser, Rabbi of the B’nei Israel shtiebel on Manhattan’s 84th Street.
“Over 1,400 days in prison, a diet of matzos and tuna fish and unimaginable loneliness and he looks great,” Besser wrote in the article titled “Free Spirit.”
“His eyes haven’t lost their gleam — if anything, they’re brighter than ever — and he looks vibrant and hearty. The insipid brown of his uniform does nothing to dim his luster,” he wrote.
Besser wondered, “how could it be that his eyes are brighter than ever, his emunah stronger than a rock?” The answer: When there’s nothing outside, Rubashkin said, you have to reach deep inward. – and discover tools most people are fortunate not to have to use.
Speaking to COLlive.com, Besser pointed out a deeper significance of the Rubashkin saga.
“It is no secret that, to many in the wider Jewish community, particularly in the yeshiva community, Lubavitch is looked at somewhat warily,” he says. “Your typical yeshiva bochur knows little about Chabad, just that they drive Mitzvah Tanks or that they wear strange yarmulkas. The yeshiva world isn’t really exposed to the depth and glory of chassidus, not even through stories.”
“And then suddenly, a chassidishe maaseh is happening before their eyes, in 2013. The protagonist isn’t a Rebbe. Rather, a relatively ordinary Jew, a butcher. And yet, he is teaching the world about real emunah, chizuk, mesiras nefesh, simcha… all the ideals of chassidus. And the world is taking notice.”
Besser, author of “Warmed By Their Fire – Intimate Glimpses of Inspiring Leaders,” called Rubashkin “a modern day hero,” and that “when the seudas hoda’a happens, they will come from Lakewood and from Crown Heights and meet in the middle…”

Instead of wasting time we should all get together and obtain signatures and support from community leaders and request the president of the United States for a commutation of sentence for Reb. Rubashkin. With the right pull in the political arena we can obtain a commutation of sentence.
Tuv hanireh vhanigleh!!
We must not forget who the real boss is Hashem!
We must show Hashem OUR Ahavas yisroel protest!!
Hestairim like this one are so incomprehensible that I often wonder whether this incredibly good man may not be in this inhuman nightmarish situation partly because of OUR wrongdoings. We each need to daven for him from the depth of our hearts and mean it when we say” V’lo yai’ohnaish shoom adam b’see’bosee- “Let no man be punished on my account” during the introductory paragraph to krias Shma sheh’al ha’metah. Hashem is a kol yachol; may He make this horrible nightmare be over today mammosh.
Is there ever going to be an appeal??
Look at how they hold Jonathan Polard!!!!
Such a shame I am heart broken!
Your absolutely right, the media is under the table the most powerful influence in society, it would pack the punch at the justice systems when they see head lines on the major news papers in america… With Hashems help
An innocent man with a family and unmarried children is sitting in prison?!! Ad mosai?!!!!!

Why don,t the ordinary newspapers- Wall Street journal, times, news, raise hell,!all we hear r the yiddishe papers, yatid néemon or jewish press etc. the secular press r too timid to open up the can of worms!
2033 it can’t happen
moshiach now!!!
Moshiach now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we can’t take it any more!!!!!
This man continues to suffer this huge travesty of justice. May 5774 be the year that Sholom Mordechai goes free!!!
dont like the message that it gives in short: here is one chabadnik that is normal hence incredible. i firstly dont even think this is true that “”Your typical yeshiva bochur knows little about Chabad, just that they drive Mitzvah Tanks or that they wear strange yarmulkas.”
I think Chabad has made a name for itself and is respected and well known by many.
The article was strong and powerful, but the message brought across to the world is not good.
Yated is not Lakewood based rather monsey based.
O
Agree with number one. The judge collaborated with the prosecutor even before the trial took place, which is absolutely a violation of every single law. The transcripts were dedacted, and the judge was allowed to sit in on the bench for HER OWN HEARING! 27 years for white collar crimes is unheard of. This is a matter that defies belief or basic understanding. Hashem should have mercy on Rabbi Rubashkin.
Just amazed
is a TZADDIK!
No words. What a sad story what a happy person.
Don’t worry….what are they gonna say when moshiach himself is gonna come and pick rubashkin up from the prison!! Not in 2033, but in 5774!!!!!!! Leshana haba biyerushalaim!!!!!!!!!!!
The cote of the article was beautiful and brought tears to my eyes. We really see the strength of a person when he is put to test. All Am Israel is praying for you, even in far away places like we in Brazil…

Yosef did somethings that on his level, had the consequence as punishment, jail and added time to his stay. So to with this ben levi…of course the jail not only expiates and cleanses, removing klipas, pure clean fruit will remain for us
The American Justice system has failed, this is a criminal matter to be looked into by the DOJ. How a judge colluded with law enforcement, the US justice at least on paper is predicated on the mantra that a person is innocent until proven guilty, in the case of SMR the Judge made up her mind a full year or 18 months before she rendered her “Verdict”.. This is an insane premise that she didn;t recuse herself from the trial, and after the facts came out that she was involved in the the planning of the “raid” she wasn’t removed… Read more »
