There’s the police academy, and then there’s the community academy.
A group of new police officers who recently completed their field-training have been assigned to the NYPD 71st Precinct which includes the Crown Heights neighborhood.
They were welcomed by the Commanding Officer, Captain John Lewis who spoke about the area and the different issues and sensitivities that come along with patrolling the neighborhood in Brooklyn South.
Following him, representatives of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council and other Jewish and non-Jewish organizations came by to brief the rookies on the local intricacies and concerns.
JJ Katz, an activist and member of Hatzalah, was there representing the volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organization. He spoke along side Richard Green, a community activist and head of the Crown Heights Youth Collective.
“We call it sensitivity training,” Katz told COLlive.com. “We need them to understand that when they spot a car or a minivan racing down the road with a siren and does not look like your standard detective car, then it’s us.”
Katz told the newcomers that on Shabbos, drivers of the Hatzalah ambulance typically won’t have their I.D. handy, although they are driving and holding radios.
“The more we explain, the less chance there is of a misunderstanding,” he said.
Officers from the Community Affairs Bureau from the 71st Precinct were also seen around the Crown Heights neighborhood, distributing information about safety and crime prevention to local residents.
Some of the tips included on a flyer they distributed were travel in groups at night, be aware of your surroundings, and keep personal electronics and phones out of sight.

Traveling down the streets in the 71st PCT area and you can be pulled over and subjected to all sorts of abuse and harassment. The public “servants” aka cops/officers will happily lock you up when they do not know that the general public has no obligation to identify themselves absent a lawfully… Read more »
