More than 65 children from various Johannesburg remedial schools enjoyed a unique camp experience at the specially arranged Camp Gan Israel hosted by Chabad of Illovo.
Following its sister program earlier this winter, which was attended by more than 300 children from mainstream schools, this camp served to cater to the special needs of these children, providing added care and attention and a higher staff to camper ratio.
“Too often the needs of these children are ignored,” says Rabbi Pini Pink, camp director. “As part of Chabad’s mission to reach out to every Jew, we realized the tremendous need for this camp, and set about creating a fun, meaningful program in a loving environment.”
According to Pink, the camp not only serves the children, it is of tremendous help to their parents. “It is extremely challenging to find appropriate activities and entertainment during the holidays, and when school is not in session, parents are left trying to balance busy work schedules and children whose special needs don’t allow them to join mainstream camps and events.”
Rabbi Michael Katz, of Chabad House, under who’s auspices Camp Gan Israel is run, was proud of the diversity the camp showed. “We were honored to host children of all backgrounds. We had kids from Bella Vista, Japari, Crossroads and Glenoaks. It was incredible to watch them unite and enjoy their days together.”
The campers enjoyed a packed schedule – a camp Gan Israel hallmark – including trips, sports, arts and crafts, drama, baking and more. The camps quick rise in popularity is seen in the multitude of campers eagerly awaiting their next session at Camp Gan Israel.
