Among the many presentations at the Kinus HaMechanchim to take place on July 9th and 10th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Danbury, CT will be a mini-seminar for all primary grade mechanchim, by Rabbi Mendel Heidingsfeld.
It is all too often that we hear someone who went through the yeshiva system get up to daven before the amud exhibit distressingly poor reading skills. It’s a fact, too many of our talmidim never learn to read properly and the scope and effect of reading problems should not be underestimated. The poor reader becomes the boy who can’t read a posuk in the Chumash or a piece of Gomora. The problem is only exacerbated as children grow older and struggle with kriyah.
All schools now accept the idea that kriyah must be taught early and reinforced through the third grade but one must have an approach which helps children without making them feel inadequate.
Rabbi Yehuda Heidingsfeld, a master Kriah professional, who is the pre-eminent Kriya consultant in Los Angeles, has created a multi-sensory system which includes continuous review and does not take up an inordinate amount of time and all mechanchim can learn how it is done. The Kinus will feature his son Rabbi Mendel Heidingsfeld.
KRIAtivity is a skills-based, data-driven, objective system for assessing and tracking every component and skill of kriah, from letter recognition to fluent reading, for every individual, on an individual basis, and providing realistic, tangible solutions for every individual while progressing the skills of the whole class. It is also a systematic method for perfecting Kriah skills.
From the basics of reading to perfecting fluency, KRIAtivity has helped children and adults who are not reading as well as they could be (including many with dyslexia). Using the traditional “Cheder Method” as a base and incorporating modern methods as needed, each KRIAtivity session is individually tailored to the particular needs of the student.
The KRIAtivity seminar is but one of the many topics featured at the Kinus.
