A group of ultra-Orthodox rabbis is waging a schmear campaign against a staple of the Jewish diet: lox.
Smoked salmon should no longer be considered kosher, they say, because the fish often contain parasitic worms.
But some Jewish New Yorkers aren’t taking the lox-down lightly.
“What is a bagel and cream cheese without the lox? It’s nothing,” kvetched Josh Loberfeld, 29, of Riverdale, a regular at the Mr. Bagel eatery near his Bronx home.
The ban was announced last month when a small group of rabbis decided that a tiny parasitic worm, called anisakis, rendered its host fish nonkosher.
Chevra Mehadrin, a group of hard- line Orthodox rabbis in Monsey, NY, released a list of newly forbidden fish.
But many Orthodox rabbis are blasting the group for hysterics.
“This issue has been resolved in Jewish law for hundreds of years already,” said Rabbi Moshe Elefant of the Orthodox Union.

Rabbi Moshe Elefant is a real Talmid Chocham you can listen to his shiurim at ou.org
I am banning ultra-Orthodox Rabbis. No more of them allowed. And those that are already here should stop worrying about what people should and shouldn’t do.
I DONT CARE! ILL STILL HAVE MY LOX & BAGELS!
BSD This is a commandment…lox is filled with sodium nitrates proven to cause asthma attacks even just one time after ingesting foods preserved with sodium nitrates in some children and headaches (even migraines), hyperactivity, nausea, and other serious diseases after longterm consumption, in both children and adults. So why would you want to ingest something that is not good for your health!!
May we sell a Bunch O-f Bagels
Please request the breath mint or listerine for after that as well. Thank you.
go buncho bagels soon ull be world famous!
“What is a bagel and cream cheese without lox?”
you guys don’t know the half of it,
what is a burger without cheese?
what is life without Ham?
but after all we are Jewish, so what do all these luxuries matter if it is prohibited?
May we merit to eat the lox along with the livyasan fish with the coming of the melech hamoshiach by this pesach in the newly cunstructed Jerusalem – AMEN!!!
is there a link to the video?
Instead the rabbis should focus on the lack of tzniyus in the Jewish community, which is also Not Kosher.
i’ll have a cream cheese with lox on an everything bagel together with pickles tomatoes and lettuce and olives sprinkled in as well while were at it.
Thank You
