Rabbi Menachem Mendel halevi Schechter, a Lubavitcher chossid who lived in Crown Heights, passed away on Shabbos Gimmel Tammuz 5775.
He was 64 and suffered from an illness for over a year.
Born in Paris, France, to his parents R’ Yehuda and Chaya Schechter – his family traces its lineage back to R’ Shalom Shachna, father of the third Chabad Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek.
When his family moved to Brooklyn, he was enrolled in Lubavitcher Yeshiva and for a short while in Oholei Torah. His love for learning, humbly shown during his youth, has stuck with him for the rest of his life.
He worked in the New York City Housing Authority, and as such helped many Jewish couples and families find suitable housing in the Crown Heights neighborhood.
While always ready to help another Jew, R’ Mendel’s great love was for learning Torah and specifically Rambam and halacha. For many years, he had a chavrusa in Shulchan Aruch with Crown Heights Rabbi Yehuda Kalman Marlow OBM.
His grandfather was Rabbi Yeshayahu Matlin, the well-known sofer stam who wrote the Rebbe’s Mezuzos and checked the Rebbe’s Tefillin. In his youth, R’ Mendel was allowed to assist in coloring in the retzuos of the Rebbe’s Tefillin.
“He was quiet and never spoke a bad work about anyone,” one of his family members recalled. R’ Mendel was a regular at Beis Binyomin (formerly the Viznitz shul) located not far from his home.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Leah Schechter (nee Borsook), their children Mrs. Sara Malka Skoblo – Crown Heights; Mrs. Shaindy Reinitz – Pembroke Pines, FL; R’ Levi Schechter – Chicago, IL; R’ Yossi Schechter – Crown Heights; Mrs. Chavi Brennan – Philadelphia, PA; Mrs. Heni Yanni – Crown Heights; Simcha Schechter, Yehuda Schechter and Gisa Schechter; and grandchildren.
He is survived by his mother Mrs. Chaya Schechter (the family asked not to inform her about the passing). He is also survived by his sister Mrs. Leah Eichler of Crown Heights.
The levaya will take place on Sunday, 4 Tammuz from Shomrei Hadas Chapels at 10:00 am and passing by 770 Eastern Parkway at 10:45 am.
The family will be sitting shiva at 706 Montgomery, Brooklyn, NY.

I was in charge of the Brooklyn NYCHA office where he worked and can only say great things about him. Soft spoken, he was hard-working, dedicated, and one of my best managers. May his family be comforted. He was a great man! My husband, Lee, also knew him and sends his thoughts of comfort to his family and friends.
Had the pleasure of working with him for a few years. He was always kind and very pleasant to work with. So sorry to hear of his passing. Peace and strength to the family.

He was in Chicago recently and I recall standing and witnessing a very beautiful scene. There was a man who had entered the shul which happens to be the same building as my school. There was a man who was either unwell or just a nudnik type person who was very passionately speaking to rabbi schechter and while the scene seemed quite amusing to me, in a very refined and beautiful manner humored this person completely and spoke to him on his level. Just something that stands out in my mind which although small, Was particularly beautiful and moving to… Read more »
