Rabbi Levi Kaplan, who has served as the Menahel in Detroit Mesivta, will be joining the staff of Yeshivas Tzeirei Hashluchim in Tzfas as the Mashgiach Kloli.
Rabbi Zalman Kaplan, Rosh Yeshiva of the Tzfas Yeshiva, informed in a letter to parents that after running the Mesivta in Detroit for nearly 10 years “with great devotion and success,” Rabbi Levi would be joining the Tzfas Yeshiva during the upcoming Elul Zman.
In his new role, Rabbi Levi will be responsible for Sidrei ha’yeshiva and the bochurim’s conduct, he said.
Rabbi Levi joins his brother, Rabbi Zalman Kaplan, who assumed the role of Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva in 2013.
The mesivta was founded around 17 years ago by Rabbi Leibel Kaplan OBM, Head Shliach of Tzfas and one of the leading Chabad officials in Israel until his passing in a car accident in 1998.
The purpose was to offer a high caliber of chassidishe and academic standards for sons of Chabad Shluchim, while charging minimal tuition from the parents who are burdened by their Chabad center’s budget.
Rabbi Levi Kaplan is the second faculty member to leave the Detroit Yeshiva in recent months. Last April, word spread that Rabbi Leime Wilhelm, Rosh Yeshiva of the Lubavitch Mesivta/Yeshiva in Detroit, would be leaving as well.
Detroit’s Yeshivas Menachem Mendel Lubavitch, for bochurim in their later teens, is led by the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Gershon Steinmetz. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Gourarie is the senior Mashpia of both Yeshivos and the Chabad community. Rabbi Mendel Shemtov and Rabbi Benzion Stein direct both institutions.
The hanhala of the Mesivta sent a letter to parents assuring them that they will soon be able to announce the name of the new Menahel who will work together with the current faculty of the Mesivta which includes Rabbi Levi Gordon, Rabbi Mendel Sharf and Rabbi Yisroel Slavaticki.

I truly feel very sorry for the entire school. The amount of love, care and dedication that Mrs Kaplan gave to the students is indescribable. Detroit had an amazing principal for their girls high school. A real shame for the girls – Mrs Kaplan will be missed and could never be replaced. Her special ways of chinuch and the chassidishe values she instilled in her students will always be held with the most fondest memories and continue to guide them in their lives as always. Wishing Mrs Kaplan much Hatzlacha. There are no words. We will never have a principal… Read more »

I know how you feel….
a sad Montrealer 🙁
Based on all the above comments, it sounds as if Rabbi Levi is as good as his brother, Rabbi Zalmen – an amazing, understanding mechanech. One of the wonderful things about Rabbi Zalmen is that he works with the bochurim – knowing that kids are not all the same.
Welcome!
We are looking forward to as good a year (if not better) than the last two.
We will miss you Mrs. Kaplan! Thank you for all you dedication and everything you gave to our school! It will simply not be the same without you.
A CMHS student
We are so excited! Our son had a great year and now rabbi Kaplan is joining. It will b even better iyh!
Levi a warm real tzfas welcome!
i’m sure u will make ur father obm proud!
wish i can join u!
Mrs Kaplan was a fantastic caring principal. It will be very hard to find someone to replace her. She will be missed. Sad news for the high school girls.
First Rabbi Leime Whilhelem left, or sent away, now Kaplan? Why such great Mechanchim / Mashpiyim are leaving? Mrs. Kaplan is the principal of the girls school, so it’s a triple loss!!! Well, good luck to them wherever they go, and good luck to Detroit in finding replacement of great Mechanchim / Mashpiyim and a girls school principal.
So sad he is leaving us. Tzfas will be so good iyH.
I hope Detroit has some serious plans. These are serious shoes to fill.
Detroit has the nicest new building of any yeshiva in the country and of course they have their unique history and reputation. But without superstar staff (and Wilhelm and Kaplan are both superstars) a yeshiva cannot thrive.
For their own good, Detroit better be making some big announcements soon.
When Levi Kaplan became Menahel in Detroit 6 years ago he brought the Mesivta to whole new level. Before he joined, Mesivta had 18 Bochurim, only 2 years later he had over 50 Bochurim and needed to turn many applicants down due to the lack of space. It’s a shame that Detroit is losing such a valuable member of their hanhala. Levi brought with him a level of organization and high expectations that very few individuals can replicate.
Hatzlacha Levi on your new Shlichus!
Who will take him over in Detroit?
