The Rabbi / Questions for Yehuda Krinsky
Interview by Deborah Solomon, New York Times
Newsweek just published a list, “The 50 Most Influential Rabbis in America,” and placed you at No. 1. As a Hasidic rabbi and a leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, do you think you can rank rabbis or any other religious leaders as if they were athletes?
I am of the opinion that you can’t rank human beings. Every person has something to contribute to the welfare of the next human being. No two people think alike or look alike, and everyone has something that another person does not have. Who’s to say who is higher and who’s lower? In terms of the essence of human beings, I don’t feel it’s proper to rank them because we don’t really know what their mission in life is.
What’s bothersome about the best-rabbi list is that it seems to exemplify a culture in which religious leaders of all stripes are fixated on power and politics, rather than philosophical questions.
Politics and religion are not soluble. They don’t mix. I learned from the Rebbe, my teacher, my mentor. The rebbe in his tenure received Bobby Kennedy and many other politicians. He gave them all the time they needed and discussed whatever they needed to discuss. But he never chose, never gave any indication of who he favored.
You’re referring to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the former leader of the Lubavitcher movement, which is based in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Weren’t you his chauffeur in your youth? Where did you take him?
I will tell you. He never left the city. The only traveling he did was to visit the gravesite of his father-in-law, which was about a 25- or 30-minute drive to Queens from Brooklyn.
He died in 1994 and named you as the executor of his will, but the Chabad movement has since split over the issue of whether he was the Messiah.
I was always opposed to that. I felt it was wrong. But there was a group of people that felt that the rebbe implied during his lifetime that he was a Messiah. They became very vocal about it and sometimes more than vocal. They made a lot of noise, like a penny in a can; shake it, and it makes a lot of noise.
How large is your endowment?
We don’t have an endowment. If we had any money in the bank we would be remiss if we didn’t invest it in Jewish life. If I had $50 million now, I could get rid of it within a few weeks. We run at a deficit.
What do you think of Mayor Bloomberg?
He’s a Bostonian, as am I. He betrayed me. He deserted the Red Sox.
What else besides baseball do you admire in American pop culture?
Bob Dylan comes to the Lubavitch outpost from time to time. Did you know that? He was at my house for dinner a couple of times.
Do you like his music?
I’m blowing in the wind.
What do you make of the popularity of various kabbalah centers that have created a fashion for Jewish mysticism?
What do you want me to say as a rabbi? That I’m elated Madonna studies kabbalah?
She is learning Hebrew; she lights candles; she seems sincere about it.
So what? In order to understand kabbalah, the Jewish tradition going back to the Zohar, you have to spend years in Torah study. In fact, many communities banned the study of kabbalah until the student finished 40 years of Torah studies.
Why are ultra-Orthodox men so regressive in their treatment of women? You wouldn’t ever shake my hand, would you?
No.
Why not?
That’s the custom. It’s a matter of modesty, the sexes not mingling.
I don’t understand why you’re unwilling to embrace social change, when you can embrace technological change. Why is e-mailing allowed?
Why should it be disallowed? If there’s anyone transforming the modern world with all this equipment and technology, it’s Chabad. We’re using all of it. We are trying to make the world a more God-friendly place.
Note: The interview has been condensed and edited. A version of will appear in print on August 8, 2010, on page MM11 of the Sunday Magazine.
TO THE EDITOR: When I first read Deborah Solomon’s interview with Yehuda Krinsky (The Rabbi, August 6), it was in an email from a friend; frankly, I thought that the interviewer was a high school student. This is not the first time that I have remarked how the Times seems willing to publish anything that attempts to cast observant Jews in a negative light, even at the expense of its own quality. What is the point of calling an article “Questions for” when half of it is simply statements of the interviewer? Perhaps had the interview not been “condensed and… Read more »
Clearly the readers of COL know much better how to hold an interview. So it is strange that the Rebbe appointed Yudel as his spokesman to the press and to form LNS, the Lubavitch News Service, to produce news releases that the Rebbe was magiah.
The Rebbe did not appoint RYLG for this task, nor did he appoint Rabbi Marlow olov hashalom, nor Rabbi Butman, nor Simon Jacobson, nor Zaki Tamir, nor any of the other great chasidim v’anshei maaseh of Lubavitch. From all the thousands of chasidim, he chose one man: Rabbi Yehudah Leib Krinksky.
when the rebbe said, “no one has heard a word i’ve ever said” – well, you’re all proving that. would the rebbe smile with approval at the way you’re attacking rabbi krinsky? would he pat you on the back with joy that you are showing disrespect to another jew? what on earth are you thinking?
Zait nisht nispoel. Chassidim know that the rebbe selected you for the position you now hold. Please continue representing the sane voice of lubavitch.
You can see that the interviewer asked one sided manipulative questions and edited for her own sake. Take the question about Orthodox men being so regressive in their treatment of women. “You wouldn’t shake my hand right”.-well women don’t shake mens hands either. It’s not the men’s treatment of women! But she asked it in a negative, leading and biased way.
Don’t blame Rabbi Krinsky. The Rebbe would be very sad to hear your negative comments about someone he chose to help the Chabad community. He is a wonderful Shliach and person.
He refused to let her draw him in. All of you should READ what he said. And how many of you subsribe to the Times? What a lot of silly comments. As someone who lived most of her life as a secular Jew and I only came to Chabad a couple of years ago, this completely resonated with me. I know it will resonate with many secular Jews. I learned the most amazing thing: Everything that happens may be for the sake of one Jew only. So everyone be quiet and try to live as the Rebbe would have wanted… Read more »
the mainstream frum world is anxiously waiting to see if reason will prevail in Chabad or the noisy fringe meshichist group will be able to steal control of the movement – Rabbi Krinsksy is at the forefront of that struggle
from what we read here he did Gants Gut! one has to put in mind that he’s not farbreinging with Chassidim in this article. Together with this I would think instead of saying “If I had $50 million now, I could get rid of it within a few weeks. We run at a deficit.” Rather clarify & say; contrary to the fact that many in the world who think there is help coming out from head Q. where in truth there is absolutely no financial help coming, and help many many Shluchim, [-especaily the newer ones], by saying; readers should… Read more »
this journalist is notorious for scewing interviewees’ words and portraying them in a negative light. this is not the case here meaning that she liked what he had to say. rabbi krinsky did a great job; he was humorous, informative, and remained politically correct and made a great kiddush hashem and lubavitch.
Holy Jews. Please read the Tzemach Tzedeks maamar on Ahavas Yisroel. (Printed even in english!) Who is the leader, who is moshiach, who is a chosid. All I read is what everyone else is and isnt. What about YOU? What about ME? What about US? The Rebbe wanted the spreading of Torah and Mitzvos and the love for all Jews. What have YOU dont for Hashem lately? What have YOU dont for the Rebbe? What have you done for Klal Yisroel? It is none of our places to decided what others can/will/have accomplished. Look at yourself. I will take my… Read more »
The rebbe said more than once: The leader of the generation, the Rebbe; is in fact the Moshiach of the generation. THIS IS A FACT.
Look in the amazing Sichos of the Rebbe, you’ll see what it says there for yourself.
It’s not US that “implied” that our Rebbe is Moshiach; the Rebbe himself said that.
Great interview-Candid, wise and with a touch of humor!
AWESOME!!!!
Questions to all those who are criticizing Yudel: 1) Out of all the shluchim and all the shpitz Chabad and maskirus, Why dd the Rebbe so clearly place him in such a central (if not powerful) position? (I do not know, but I do know that he did, as the recent din-Torah ruled.) 2) One thing is obvious from the fact that the Rebbe placed him as a “custodian”; The Rebbe had reason to trust that he would do as the Rebbe had wanted. 3) Having thought about all that (Chabad IS still about thinking); When Yudel says something, should… Read more »
LOL!!
OK all you calm down. Reb Yudel did great!
Rabbi K did a great job. All you guys are just jealous…………or do you work for …..?
what a big Chilull Hashem to talk about people who belive the Rebbe is Moshiach in such a way i was by the rebbe Chal hamoed Succos and the Rebbe said that every chossid should belive the Rebbe is Moshiach
You complain that he is being judged for what she edited and that it is the paper who wrote on him “leader of lubavitch” and that he is a “true man” of the Rebbe. Lets make a deal: you guys stop promoting him as the leader / executor / CEO etc of lubavitch and don’t campaign for him to take credit for all the hard work of the shluchim [that he has zero involvement with] and we will only say good things about how he served the rebbe with dedication If you can’t stand the heat, don’t stand under the… Read more »
mosque on temple mount is there to keep us out. we can get in when we live in harmony as Yidden. point to someone and three fingers point back. look into ourselves and stop lashon hara. this interview was a good thing, shows outsider Yidden that we’re not nutso fanatics.
I have not seen any more than anyone else regarding this interview. Before you criticize remember reporters take hours of interviews and condense then to a couple of pages. For all we know Rabbi Krinsky (show some respect and don’t call him Yudel) might have spent 3 hour talking about the Rebbe, Chasidus, Sheva Mitzvas etc. and the reporter took 15 minutes of what she thought the readers of her paper would like to read and printed it.
Judgement before Elul, good for all of you to make judgements and point fingers, whta a great way to go into Elul. None of you live in the non-observant world – I did. Had I read this in my old days, if he said, “Light candles, wrap tefillin, etc.,” I would have stopped reading. and used my old thought, “They’re religious fanatics.” He is showing that we are all Jews and don’t become l’havdil monks. We live in the world and still are separate. This is the best thing that could have happened before Elul, appreciate it and pray Hashem… Read more »
I have no doubt that she cherry picked what she wanted to be published. I read her interviews every Sunday, she does the same thing with other people.
Rabbi Krinsky is a true man of the Rebbe.
the rebbe wanted us to engage with the world to bring other jews to HASHEM. they’ll see he’s cool and they won’t be so closed to lubavitch. these postings will only encourage their secular hatred of us. remember the rebbe talked to kids about baseball? stop judgeing, you’re not building the beit hamikdash. go out and engage another jew and stop judgeing
The secular Jews will see that Lubavitch can be cool – THEY are the ones reading NY Times Magazine, not the people who read COLLIVE. Calling the Rebbe the Moshiach is tantamount to believing in yashca, Gd forbid. We DON’T know who Moshiach is, only HaShem knows. The Rebbe NEVER implied he was Moshiach. In fact: The sefer I came across is a translation of the Rebbe’s Sichot focusing on Chapter 11 & 12 of the Rambam’s sefer Mishna Torah, specifically chapters from Hilchos Melochim (Rules applying to the King of Israel). I am quoting below from pages 22 &… Read more »
Did they let ALL of the loonies leave the asylum today? Some of the above comments are so ludicrous that it’s unbelievable that sane people could possibly have written them. A little intelligence here, people. Rabbi Krinsky IS a critically important person in Lubavitch. The NY Times interviewed the RIGHT person. And his answers were said with wisdom and cogency. The Times prints what it chooses to print. That’s the way newspapers operate. Rabbi Krinsky deserves much, much more respect and derech eretz than we peasants know to give. We are blessed to have a person like Rabbi Krinsky in… Read more »
because otherwise i’m really disappointed… redsox? was our leader? wheres the kiddush Hashem part?
This is what Newsweek published… how could Rabbi K even agree to this?
1.Yehuda Krinsky—As the leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, Krinsky is the contemporary face of the Hasidic branch. (2009 Ranking No. 4)
Isn’t the Rebbe our leader? What a waste of an interview.
“The Rebbe in his tenure” Does that mean his tenure is over and now its you runing the movment?? Its hard enough to watch you take credit for the hard work of the shluchim but “the Rebbe in his tenure” you can’t be that full of yopurself..
Rabbi Krinsky
was the Rebbes chauffeur, that that, NOTHING else…. This interview is a disgrace for Lubavitch…If any one else would answer the same answers, he would be criticized from everyone, When Rabbi Krinsky answers that, its really a HUGE CHILUL HASHEM…(instead of fighting RAYS he should learn from him how to talk and what to say)
Great interview. yasher koach rabbi kirinsky
i dont understand you big chassidim you scream rebbe this rebbe that. the rebbe appointed him spokesperson of lubavitch do you think you know better than the rebbe?
Bloomberg thinks Chanina is the leader of Lubavitch!
could everyone stop screaming at him, the interview was not about the rebbe it was about him.
if I ask you questions about yourself will you start telling me all about the rebbe.
please give me (and Rabbi krinsky) a break.
They asked him about Madonna so he should answer that the rebbe has ten mivtzoim?
Let’s use our heads and we won’t sound so stupid
What a great representation of Lubavitch.
Rabbi Krinksy handled the media well.
He is pure and honest and is a dugme Chaya of what a chossid should be!
The Rebbe talked about the Yankees, Yudel can talk about the Sox.
he should not have agreed to the interview. however a journalist can twist but cannot make up. he did have to mention those names (madonna, dylan etc..) in order for her to have put them in the article to begin with. a real shame for lubavitch. he may be called the spokesman, but he doesn’t represent my point of view.
Kol Hakovod to Baila Olidort, Yaakov Behrman and the entire Lubavitch.com team for bringing honor to the Rebbe’s Mosdos and shluchim. Keep up the amazing work and Kiddush Hashem!
If Rabbi K’s mistake was as you said, well, that’s a big mistake for a person who has been a spokesman for 50 years. My father is a Shliach and after being taken out of context a few times, he always insists that if the newspaper is going to EDIT the interview, he must review it first. They always agree. Either way though, when a TRUE chosid speaks about the Rebbe, the listener hears “Rebbe”. You think all those Balei Teshuva came because we shluchim are so great? No. They came because they saw the Rebbe in us. This did… Read more »
Clearly the editor highlights and publishes that which she deems relevant. It’s beautiful to see that even after that filtering process, the message of the Rebbe, of Lubavitch is evident: To love and care for your fellow Jew above all.
Look at the questions he was asked, he did not bring up the topics, he only responded to them. Even Bob Dylan he brings as an example of someone in pop culture that is connected to Lubavitch.
The Rebbe remains forever The Rebbe. The Rebbe did instruct us clearly to designate a Rav to fulfill Asay Lecha Rav and not to be subjective in dealing with ruchnios or gashmiasdiker matters when we are not able to get a clear directive from the Rebbe. So whether you like Rabbi Krinsky or not or you complain about the lack of leadership in Lubavitch, just take the Rebbes directive of Asay Licha Rav to continue in the Rebbes derech till Bias Hamashiach;may it be Now!
To: 1. The first 2 questions were about the Rebbe. These are journalists, they get intrigued by shtusim I’m sure it was a 3 hour interview that they took 3 minutes of. Do you really think Rabbi Krinsky didnt talk about the important things? 3. medicine my friend medicine might be the only answer. 4. Calm down and take a hanky. theres more about the Rebbe in there then Modana…… obviously they talked much more about the Rebbe but quoted the one word about Modana Dylan etc. Use your head. 5. See the answer to number 3 and follow directions… Read more »
Rabbi Krinsky, A Big Yasher Koach. You bring a lot of Kovod to the Rebbe and to the whole Lubavitch movement. Chazak Chazak V’Nizchazeik.
In an interview you answer the questions that you are asked. If the reporter asked about bloomberg, you cant really answer with mivtzoyim! and as number 7 said, this is NOT the full interview! there is more to it that we havent seen. and the part that we do see has been edited
So could it be that Rabbi Krinski Is the 8th Generation?
Did you miss this line: “The interview has been condensed and edited”?
If Rabbi K made a mistake it was agreeing to the interview in the first place, not what he said. We all know how journalists can twist anyone’s words to their liking.
Rabbi Krinsky, did you talk to the interviewer about Shabbos candles, or, Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach?
“Leader of the Chabad movement??” Correct me please but isn’t the Rebbe our Leader?
This is modern Lubavitch.
Reb Yudel, it’s not about you; it’s about the Rebbe. If only you’d spoken about the Rebbe instead of the Redsox, Madonna, and Bob Dylan.
A chosid should be “see-through”. When you look at a true chosid, you should see “Rebbe”. Not the case here. I want to cry.
How can he just sit quietly when someone calls the Rebbe “the former leader of Lubavitch”?
no doubt why hes our spokeman
u had such a gr8 chance to say something positiveten mivtzoim, rebbe etc. instead the red sox and all the other shtusim. m’ken shemen zich!
