The Creative Soul; a new group dedicated to bringing creativity and art to the Orthodox/Chassidic community and promoting Torah inspired art, is presenting a speech by the renowned lecturer and speaker, Rabbi Manis Friedman titled “Finding Color in a Black & White System” taking place on Tuesday, October 16 at the 425 Kingston Ave, Creative Soul’s temporary gallery space.
The speech will question the relationship between creativity and personal expression and what appears as a more rigid and mainstream Chassidic life.
Especially geared to teens and young adults who may be struggling to find room for personal expression and individuality while adhering to the rules and doctrines of a Chassidic way of life.
The evening will be open to everyone, with separate seating and a mechitzah adhering to Halacha letter and inspiring to enhance the spirit of Torah.
The cost is $5 Students and $10 Adults.

#11-13,
Address my point in some form I’m sure he will; satisfactorily probably not. Rabbi Friedman may be smart, but there’s only so much one can work with before crossing into the territory of intellectual dishonesty.
By definition these two areas create tension. A true artist may live with whatever temporary inspiration he gets from this event. But you can’t kosher self expression using the standards of an outside, non artistic, “norm”–in this case the community–and still call it SELF expression.
He will addres this I am sure
ditto
you’re either a hopeless pessimist or you just don’t know manis friedman.
As the poster says
the event begins at 7:30pm
yes please video or record and put it on youtube or whatever. thanks!!!
I’m skeptical that this event will satisfy those that think in black and white, or those that think in colors and personal expression.
Self-expression in ancient Jewish culture existed in the form of craftsman and artisans. It was poured into things like Megila calligraphy and synagogue design. This was its outlet and there was no shulchan aruch or “minhag” to quash it.
Creativity and self expression as they exist nowadays, however, are products of the enlightenment. They have have frustratingly little place in the ghetto.
please record it and post it on youtube or jewtube please!!!!!
