This is an excellent question. Suggested answer: The Rebbe indeed said that “Avodas Habirurim” — the work of refining the world by doing Mitzvos — has already been completed. However, although it’s true that the Jewish people’s work in general has already been accomplshed, and the world is generally ready for Moshiach, nevertheless, that doesn’t preclude further fine-tuning and improvement, especially within ourselves, to make ourselves and those around us ready and better prepared for Moshiach.
