Rabbi Mendel Zaltzman, Shliach in the Jewish Russian Community Centre of Ontario (JRCC) has received the Queen Elizabeth II – diamond Jubilee medal.
At a JRCC east Thornhill Community BBQ Sunday attended by some 200 community members and the MP of Thornhill Peter Kent, Minister of the environment in the government of Canada presented the Medal to Rabbi Zaltzman on behalf of the governor general.
He spoke about the achievements of Rabbi Zaltzman in his 8 years of work in the community alongside his father the senior Shliach to the Jewish Russian Community of Ontario. He made special mention of the furniture bank that will be opening shortly in a newly renovated 13,000 square feet facility that will serve the needy in York Region.
Rabbi Zaltzman responded in kind, thanking the minister, and through him the government, especially the PM for the support of the JRCC, the Jewish community in Canada, and the unwavering support for the holy land.
The crowd enjoyed a BBQ, salads and a special Bucharian dish made by a top chef who is a member of the community. Others made sure all the men put of tefilin.
