Resplendent in the colors of the rainbow with creative and innovative costumes galore, Moldova celebrated 5782 in style. Purim celebrations were held all across the country as Chabad Moldova organized Purim parties, megillah readings and many more functions for thousands of Jews.
Events were held in Kishinev, Transinistria and countless cities and towns, with locals displaying a new found Jewish pride in these growing Jewish communities. Just fifty years ago, public celebrations of Jewish life was unheard of in these former Soviet controlled areas, but today a new generation has grown up to see their Jewishness as an integral part of their lives. Year after year, people flock to Chabad for Yom Tov, Shabbos and life events to connect with their Jewish heritage. This year was no different with record numbers attending the events organized by the dedicated shluchim of Chabad Moldova.
Sobering this year’s celebrations however, was the dark cloud that hung over their corner of the world as Moldova continued to see thousands of refugees, fleeing the war in Ukraine , pour into the country in search of safety. Chabad has been there for these refugees providing them with a place to rest their weary bodies and catered meals to eat.
Additionally, Purim celebrations were organized in the refugee resorts ensuring that despite the current situation, these Jewish families would be able to partake in the mitzvos and joy of the yom tov.
Hundreds of people packed into the social halls of the rented refugee camps to hear a poignant reading of the megillah, full of extra significance this year. This was followed by a gourmet dinner and hearty words of faith and perseverance from rousing speakers. The happiness on the children’s faces was priceless especially knowing what a welcome distraction this was to their hardships over the past month.
Over the next few months Chabad Moldova will be at the frontline in providing both the material aid needed for the refugees as well as the spiritual services so desperately needed.
Chabad Moldova has rented 3 resorts to house the growing number of fleeing Jews and the groups are still coming. After 50 hours and more of bus rides and treks on foot to reach the safe haven of Chabad Moldova, we are striving to provide the highest standards of comfort and care to help them recover and plan for the days ahead.
While taking on this monumental feat, in addition to the inspirational shlichus these families carry out year round, is a difficult task it’s made all the worth it just witnessing the amazing sight of Jews returning to the proud traditions of their heritage and yiddishkeit.
On this auspicious day, please open your hearts to help our sisters and brothers in pain.
