President Barack Obama has commuted the sentences of more individuals than the past 7 presidents combined.
On Wednesday, he cut down prison time for 214 federal inmates, bringing the total number of commutations to 562 while in office, NBC News reported. The Department of Justice says it’s more than the past nine presidents combined.
The administration’s focus in granting clemency has been on inmates convicted of nonviolent drug offenses and are serving sentences that, if those same people were found guilty today, would not be as long, NBC reported.
The White House said that the president “remains committed to using his clemency power throughout the remainder of the Administration to give more deserving individuals that same second chance.”
With more commutations expected before the president leaves the White House next January, members in the Jewish community are hoping that among them will be former kosher meat executive, Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.
More than 100 former U.S. attorneys general, judges and other officials signed a letter questioning the disturbing tactics used by prosecutors to secured a 27-year prison sentence for Rubashkin.
According to NBC, the Obama administration is also reviewing clemency requests from prisoners who have served at least 10 years of their sentences and have shown good behavior while behind bars.

Look at the upheavals and bloodshed in many Arab countries, especially Syria. Deaths in that civil war are in the HUNDREDS of thousands. Many are accusing the Obama administration of instigating these wars. If so, the results seem to indicate that, ironically, he must hate the Arabs!
According to famed white collar attorney, Ben Brafman, times have changed. A generation ago, a financial crime would not have generated a harsh sentence. But, in order to stay ahead of those, who took advantage of the leniencies, the government kept on upping the penalties to the extent that now, you can serve more jail time than for rape or murder.

With all due respect to you, what Rubashkin supposedly did was far less punishable than some other criminals who got less than 5 years. Why, recently in the news a guy who raped and killed a drunk lady got a few months. Where’s the seichel in that? Even some rapists got less than a year. Bush may have been the one who was in office when the raid happened, but by the time the actual 27 year sentence came Obama was already in office. No, Obama had plenty of chances to free Rubashkin and he chose to ignore it.
Did you say the same thing when liberals were so outraged over Republicans who pardoned prisoners, or is this just a disguised attack, against conservatives?
Would you excuse terrorist attacks as ‘only killing some extremely tiny %’ of the population?

There are approximately 2,220,000 people in the US prison system. Obama issued clemency to 214 inmates, or 0.00009639 percent of the prison population. For those who can’t do basic arithmetic, that amounts to 1 out of every 10,373 prisons. Try to let that sink in before you engage in underhanded political attacks disguised as self-righteous phony outrage.

For this alone, commuting the harsh sentences of so many non violent offender, he deserves praise. Surely this is in line with the Torah’s principles of treating people fairly and respectfully. Bush, no friend of the Jews was the one who put Rubashkin away.

Dear # 7, I believe there is a difference. Rubashkin’s is not a (supposed) security threat.
Also, in one of the many articles by Devorah Maimon in ‘Yated’ an attorney said, that if caring Americans knew the great travesty of justice perpetrated against S.M Rubashkin they would be ‘rioting in the streets.’
So, we all can make a huge march on Washington D.C. (Remember Oslo demo?) to cry out against this horrific & murderous incarceration. (There have/are many Americans falsely imprisoned, with long sentences, in ‘The Goldener Medina.’)
All of the people who he is letting out were put to jail by previous presidents. Rubashkin was put in jail by Eric Holder Obama’s Attorney General.
The sitting president, as far as i know, cannot give clemency to a prisoner who has an active court case.

Rubashkin in my opinion is the new Jonathan Pollard a deal was made for pollard after 30 years for him. there is no such pressure or will or need to do the same with Rubashkin he was a means to an end etc. I hope I am wrong
