New York City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) will soon be changing its parking meters on Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights to accommodate vehicles of Shabbos-observant residents.
The Department announced on June 8th that parking regulation on the neighborhood main throughway will be amended from one hour to allow four-hour metered parking on Fridays.
It comes in response to requests from Community Board 9, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, and Council Member Laurie Cumbo to implement adjusted metered parking on Kingston Ave.
The idea was proposed by Community Board 9 Member Yaacov Behrman that the DOT adjust the meters on Kingston so that residents can park there on Friday during the winter weeks, thus freeing up a large amount of available parking.
The Transportation Committee and Community Board 9 then voted unanimously to support the proposal.
“It is a common fact that observant Jewish communities cannot move their cars on Shabbat or religious holidays, as total abstention from any forms of work is required by Jewish religious law,” Assemblywoman Richardson wrote to the Department of Transportation in Jan of 2016.
“Traffic enforcement agents have been issuing summonses to residents in heavily Shabbat-observing communities where meters allow for a maximum of one-two hour parking, that typically last until 7 PM. This makes things difficult for my Shabbat observing constituents, and imposes undue cost and violations especially during the fall and winter months when Shabbat begins as early as 4 PM.”
The DOT will implant the changes by the end of July 2017.
I can’t understand why there is alternate parking Shabbos in CH. Eastern Pkwy service road. Already no parking either side of the street 3 days a week.
Oish!
Troy doesn’t have Shabbos parking at all.
I think #11 is talking about buses that are parked along the length of Brooklyn Avenue not near the schools (such as between President and Carroll). Yes, a solid line of buses there gives muggers a screen.
There are no meters on that block.
Whats the connection between buses and mugging??
Another point is, the buses park by the school which is a LEGAL spot for overnight being that is for only for school buses.
Maybe something can be done about the very unsafe problem of the school buses parking on Brooklyn Ave every night as well
Besides being a risk for getting mugged it takes away all available parking and is illegal
There is Alternate side parking on shabbos on Eastern Pkwy.
Can we get this changed as well?
Eastern parkway and union East side is museum and bus stop equals no parking.
Your a real activist getting things done not just for photo ops
Perhaps u can make a project now to change alternate side arming to two days a week like in Borodkin Park
Thanks for all your dedication
Wow R’ yaacov so amazing we feel your love and care for this wonderful community.
Love you Yaacov
I believe this is already in effect on 13th avenue and perhaps some other streets in Boro Park.
After reading the letter, Kingston between union and eastern parkway east side is the side of the JCM which has 24hr no standing, it’s the side of 770 (west side) that has the meters. So does the mean they are changing the laws or did they make a mistake. Am I wrong?
Don’t Forget about Troy ave as well. its also in CH
It very appreciated, but can we also have albanay ave
Thank you Yaacov Behrman!! Well done.
they forgot Kingston ave from President st to Carroll st
