The new budget proposed by the New York State Governor virtually eliminates funding for the State’s Division of Kosher Law Enforcement. This department has been in operation for over 100 years, ensuring that New York consumers are not victims of fraud by manufacturers claiming to be providing a product that is Kosher when it is is not. The Department also is an important safeguard for the reputation of Kosher product manufacturers in New York, an important sector of New York’s economy.
Please lobby your state legislators and Governor Paterson and ask them to restore funding to this important program.

Ask him to fund the Kosher Law Enforcement Division and keep protecting NY State Consumers.
Ask him to keep the Division as a separate unit to preserve its effectiveness and focus.
Ask him to restore funding for travel so that the kosher Division can protect consumers around the State and maintain inspection visits outside NY City.

This agency is not to be confused with a Rav Hamachseer. nor do they claim to act as such. An example of what they do, and have been known to do well, is to make sure that purveyers of kosher meat are not switching packaging and labels and trying to pass off as kosher that which is treif by anyone’s standards .Fraud of this type would become far more rampant if storekeepers wouldn’t be afraid of government inspectors. NY State enforcement of kashrus is not reliable in any event.
Is this really something that NY State should be paying for? In this day and age, when the state is billions of dollars in the red, perhaps it is best for them not to spend our money on something that private organizations do so well.
