For a publication geared to chassidic women and girls, N’shei Chabad Newsletter has not been known as one that shies away from tackling controversial issues.
The long-running periodical founded in 1976 has a track-record of addressing “the hard stuff” with honesty and compassion.
But this move might be one of its boldest yet.
In an effort to update its look and appeal, the newsletter staff has hired a new graphic designer who graduated from the Morristown Smicha Program in New Jersey just last year.
Boston-born Leibel Krinsky, a talented photographer who is also a graphic designer, was given the task of revamping its pages.
“It is a unique challenge doing a magazine with such diverse content and in black and white,” he told COLlive.com as the forthcoming Kislev 5773 (December 2012) issue hits the newsstands.
“The challenge is giving it a readable minimalistic design while keeping it feminine,” Krinsky said. “I am building the look on readability.
“Being that the magazine has so many different articles and so much reading, I feel it needs to stay away from a lot of busy designs which you see in color magazines.”
Rishe Deitsch, senior editor of the N’shei Newsletter, said Krinsky is “a young man with a vision” and that she is pleased with the “complete makeover.”
Deitsch said the magazine’s content remains the same, which she described as “a blend of practical and inspirational, designed to address the multi-faceted needs of today’s Chabad families and singles.”
In the new issue, Hindi Karnafogel speaks about raising triplets (you’ve got to see the adorable photos), Chana Shloush on how women should farbreng, Sarah Jusevitz addresses disagreements in families on chinuch, and Bais Rivkah teacher Esty Newfield shares ideas for making a lesson sparkle.
And, as always, N’shei readers have strong opinions on Naomi Cohen‘s poem about a parent’s mixed feelings towards an adult disabled child.
The N’shei Chabad Newsletter is offering a sale from now through Chanukah: Two for One. Buy two subscriptions for the price of one. Find out more at NsheiChabadNewsletter.com
it should be sold on Kingston ave and in Empire Kosher on Sunday and it’s as beautiful as promised!
GOOD JOB LEIBEL KRINSKY AND N’SHEI CHABAD NEWSLETTER STAFF
I enjoy the magazine thoroughly but find it VERY inconvenient to read as the cover is a fairly hard cover and therefore doesn’t lay flat. I can’t just open it and turn a page and it will stay open, because of the hard cover.
wow looks great!
love the nishei!
That was my first impression, looking at this stunning new cover!!!
Has the look of a mainstream magazine, with only appropriate, high quality, valuable content of course.

It’s about time!
This is real swell. Krinsky is second to none and rising quickly. The only trouble is, gee whiz there is none. Nshei should be celebrating and thanking Hashem for this.
Nshei magazine always looks so beautiful!
Possibly one of the top ten coolest dudes of all time
i now leibel for a long time and he does a very good designing work I am shure that he is going to to bee the best for the nshei!!
Beautiful cover!!
I have been a long time fan of Krinsky’s work. His artistic ability to enhance an image while leaving it’s natural essence is nothing short of splendid. I have hired him for family photo shoots and graphic design and he always left me impressed and satisfied. This is a great move by NShei and I’m sure Kfar Chabad magazine will be eyeing Krinsky’s progress. – The Rofei Family.
Given that they must have tried to find a qualified Lubavitcher woman first, I guess they then had to try “Plan B” and hire a man. 🙂
Will it be like feminism in reverse, where he’ll have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good — as a woman?! 🙂
But seriously, bracha v’hatzlocha to the N’shei Newsletter, a magazine with superb content, no matter how you lay it out!
Mel ur the best!!
