“I feel like a proud Jew,” is what a 15 year old boy said to his father. “Putting on Tefillin on the Mitzvah Tank was the favorite part of my day. Today this boy is a Baal Teshuva, keeps Shabbos, and puts on Tefillin daily.”
This is a story that this boy’s father excitedly told to Rabbi Mendy Cheruty, director of Chabad Israeli Center of Miami, as he stepped inside the Mitzvah Tank.
Chabad Israeli Center of Miami has finally completed the big project of renovating and designing their Mitzvah Tank. The 34 foot long tank is beautifully designed by Rabbi Boruch Margaliot from Israel, with the ten Mivtzoim of the Rebbe, 7 Mitzvos B’nei Noach, and the Rebbe’s message of bringing Moshiach. The eye-catching design attracts people who stop to take pictures and ask questions, such as on the subject of Taharas Hamishpacha. Large speakers with music draw a fascinated crowd.
The tank goes through the Miami, North Miami Beach, and Aventura regions, shopping centers and areas popular with Israelis. Many Anash volunteers are involved with doing Mivztoim and this gives Chayus to the entire Lubavitch community. The focus of the tank is doing Mivtza Tefillin, Mivtza Mezuzah and Neshek. People have the opportunity to sign up for a letter in the Childrens’ Sefer Torah. The Mitzvah Tank hosts a growing library as well as Shiurim and Minyanim. There are sometimes 40 people in the tank at Teffilas Mincha. Programs for children and rallies also take place.
The Mitzvah tank activities are part of the many amazing programs that Chabad Israeli Center is involved with, including their food bank and weekly fresh food distribution to 40 families which keeps expanding.
The Rebbe said about Mitzvah Tanks, that it has the potential to reach remote places and people. The Rebbe brings out in the Sicha (13 Tammuz, 5735) that we need to reach out to help a needy person materially instead of waiting for him to ask. Similarly, we need to seek those who are spiritually deprived.
Chabad Israeli Center of Miami looks forward to have people committing to put on Tefillin every day, knowing that this can be their stop each morning, while enjoying coffee.
