Rabbi Boruch and Chaya Ceitlin are establishing Chabad of Riverside and Old Greenwich in Connecticut, which will be the first local Jewish institution in these areas known as a vibrant community of young families.
Riverside and Old Greenwich are located within the town of Greenwich along the Long Island Sound. While Old Greenwich has a historical charm with its classic New England ambiance, both areas share an upscale yet relaxed lifestyle and a family-friendly environment.
Despite Greenwich housing various Jewish institutions, Riverside and Old Greenwich lacked a local Jewish center until now. The new Chabad aims to fill this void and cater to the 11% of the population that is Jewish, offering a space for connection and pride in Judaism.
“With what’s going on in Israel and the world, Jewish people feel the need to connect more with Judaism,” said Rabbi Ceitlin. “We have expedited our move to create the first Jewish space in the neighborhood for residents to connect and feel safe.”
Rabbi Boruch, born in Montreal, Canada, brings a rich experience. His education spanned Chabad Yeshivas across Detroit, Israel, Argentina, and New York. He led summer and winter camps, Hebrew schools, Mayanot Shlichus in Jerusalem, and campus outreach initiatives.
For Chaya Ceitlin (nee Deren), the move will be a personally meaningful one. She was born and raised in Connecticut, where her parents, Rabbi Yossi and Mariyashe Deren, serve as Shluchim of Greenwich, and has taken an active role in assisting them over the years.
Their appointment was under the leadership of Rabbi Yisroel Deren, head Shliach of Western and Southern New England.
Chaya boasts her own robust background with education in Pittsburgh, New York, and Israel. Her experience includes managing camps, teen programs, and a Shlucha in Mayanot of Jerusalem.
Having been born into Shlichus in Greenwich, Chaya has already cultivated a strong connection with the local community. Their 2 children will be the fourth generation of Shluchim in Connecticut and the sixth generation of Shluchim in the USA, dating back to Pittsburgh Shluchim Rabbi Sholom and Chaya Posner OBM.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to create and build the Jewish community,” said Chaya Ceitlin. Their eagerness to create a Jewish hub in Riverside and Old Greenwich aims to offer a safe, prideful, and connected space for the local Jewish community during challenging times.
