Some 800 Jewish families living in Recife, a port city in northeastern Brazil, will be welcoming a new force of good in their community: a Chabad couple.
Rabbi Eliyahu Yisrael Maman and his wife Nava Tehila will be traveling this Monday to the city as the new Chabad Shluchim.
The young enthusiastic couple plans on working with the the local Jewish children’s club and the city’s Jewish youth, COLlive was told.
Another aim of theirs will be reaching out to the Israeli tourists and backpackers visiting South America.
The Jewish community in Recife dates back 400 years when Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav de Punska arrived from Holland with a group of Jews.
The Kahal Tzur Yisrael synaogue in the city is said to be the first in the Americas. It serves today as a museum.
Tell it like it is.
