France’s sports minister has accused French striker Nicolas Anelka of making a ‘disgusting anti-Semitic’ gesture.
Anelka made what is regarded as a reversed Nazi salute after scoring a goal during match in the English Premier League.
The Football Association says they are launching an investigation into the alleged anti-Semitic gesture made by the West Bromwich Albion footballer during the match on December 28.
The gesture is known as the ‘quenelle’ signal, and is rapidly gaining popularity with anti-Semites throughout Europe as a way around strict anti-hate speech laws.
Hundreds of Europeans are posting pictures of themselves online performing the salute. Many of the images are taken at sensitive locations such as the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the Anne Frank House.
The salute involves extending the right hand toward the ground, with the left hand grasping the shoulder.
Anelka is a former French national team star who converted to Islam in 2004. Civilians in France are allowed to make the symbol, but President Francois Hollande said recently that the government will take steps to limit its use.
The gesture was made famous a few years back by controversial French anti-establishment comedian Dieudonne. The French government is trying to ban his shows as the country remains heated between pro and anti-Dieudonné politicians and celebrities.
Anelka has long been a friend of Dieudonné and they have been photographed together in the past doing the Quenelle but it is the first time that he has publicly backed his friend’s political position. Anelka attempted to defend himself on Twitter, saying he was only paying tribute to Dieudonne.
come on United
Even though they are considered inferior by the other Muslim races.
A very good player, but an antisemite nevertheless.
He’s on a rubbish team which is great.
The black converted to Islam…
You didnt hear?
Why aren’t anti-semites allowed to express themselves freely?
BS”D but he thought so little of them (blacks) that he wouldn’t even waste a bullet on them
be smarter next time!!!! such a bad excuse on twiter.
Anelka’s twitter says he was just doing it as a tribute to his comedienne friend Dieudonné M’bala M’bala. Dieudonne has been convicted in court seven times for antisemitic remarks and has used “heil hitlers” in his comedy routines and calls Holocaust memorials a joke.
NBA Star NBA Tony Parker of The Spurs did the same thing.
We should bombard this “je ne sais quoi”‘s facebook page. He says he is not an anti anything, and that the symbol is not anti-semetic or anything relating to the nazis. First: we cant expect much from a soccer player, he kicks a plastic ball into a net, oooh this guy is a diplomat and outstanding citizen. What a “Je ne sais quoi”! Second, this symbol is very connected to a famous French anti-semite and anti-establishment anarchist. If Anelka is innocently doing a symbol, he should understand the context the symbol is connect to and not do it out of… Read more »
