In the coming year, the Yeshiva Gedola of New Haven will be unveiling an innovative Kovetz to help bochurim progress in their Gemara learning from basic to advanced levels in an engaging and structured manner.
This unique resource was created by Rabbi Chanoch Bistritzky, Menahel of New Haven Zal. He dedicated it in memory of his daughter Ita Bistritzky OBM, with the goal of revolutionizing Gemara L’Iyun studies.
The Kovetz comprises a wealth of sources and questions to guide students in understanding what to focus on during their sugya study, along with various other helpful features. It is part of the Yeshiva’s efforts to merge rigorous learning with a uniquely positive and engaging environment.
There is a noticeable gap and concerns have been raised about bochurim spending most of their day studying Gemara L’iyun. This experience can feel abstract, leaving many bochurim uncertain about their progress, “a sentiment I, too, encountered during my time in Yeshiva,” Rabbi Bistristky points out. The issue isn’t ability but rather the need for guidance and a clearer path to make Gemara more meaningful and profound. Often, bochurim find themselves at year’s end uncertain about their accomplishments.
“Sure, it’s possible to cram information, but this Kovetz helps by offering references and questions that place Gemara into context,” explains Rabbi Bistritzky. “By exploring why Rashi raises certain points, the Kovetz will help create a storyline and key takeaways from their learning, deepening their understanding.”
By year’s end, the goal is for bochurim to feel that they comprehend the relevance of their studies and grasp the essence of in-depth learning. The aim is to cultivate a sense of achievement by the end of the school year.
Rabbi Bistritzky explains, “This is just the initial version, with plans to refine it in response to student feedback. The intention is for the Kovetz to evolve annually, adapting based on student experiences.”
Rabbi Bistritzky is thrilled to share that those who’ve previewed version 1 of the Kovetz are enthusiastic about the concept and eagerly anticipate its implementation this year.
This initiative is one of many undertaken by the Yeshiva to create a smoother, more successful experience for bochurim while maintaining a high standard of learning.
“This isn’t about simplifying the process, but rather making it more accessible. We want to be recognized for our strong, quality learning, while also having a younger leadership that understands the challenges bochurim face today. Our goal is to create a more positive and reachable learning journey,” he said.
