Ahavas Chased, a medical and emergency lifeline, has announced a new transportation service on Shabbos and Yom Tov for Crown Heights residents.
Arrangements have been made with Rainbow Car Service to provide non-emergency transport to the hospital.
“When time is not of essence as there is no immediate risk to life and limb – such as a pregnant woman, a cut that needs stitches, or a dislocated shoulder – one should call a non-Jewish taxi,” says Rabbi Avraham Lider, Executive Director of Ahavas Chesed.
But, he specifies, when in doubt – always call Hatzalah.
Drivers at Rainbow Car Service (718-498-9291) have been informed that they must open and close the car doors for all the passengers when they enter or exit the vehicle.
They will also carry any bags from the patient’s home to the vehicle, and from the vehicle into the hospital building.
Lider agreed with the owners of the Car Service that the drivers would not request any money. “Payment arrangements have already been made,” he says.
“You must mention that you are a Jewish patient and that it is the Jewish Shabbos or a Jewish holiday. The security code is CHESED,” Lider adds.

What a true chessed arrangement. I have been in this situation where we did not need hatzoloh, but clearly needed a hospital and it was very hard to explain to the taxi company what was needed.
