Mrs. Menucha Lerman, a long time resident of Crown Heights who was active in the field of education for many years, has passed away Tuesday, 23 Adar 5773.
She was 77.
Born in Russia to the chassidic Feigenson family, the stark scenes she witnessed in her childhood helped shaped her personality and what she would devote her life to.
The strict atheist rules the Communists imposed on others only propelled her faith in Hashem and strengthened her devotion to the Rebbe.
“She was very strong in her hiskashrus and not only asked for the Rebbe’s guidance in her life, but also obeyed when she was told to do something,” a family member recalls.
Her involvement in educating Jewish children took her and her husband, Rabbi Tzvi Abba Lerman from working in the Chabad educational institutions in Pittsburgh, PA, to New Jersey and eventually to Brooklyn, New York.
In fact, it was during their Sheva Brachos celebration that the Rebbe has instructed them to leave for Pittsburgh on Shlichus. When it was pointed out that they were newly weds, the Rebbe replied that the Sheva Brachos can continue in their new location.
In Crown Heights, he teaches at the Lubavitcher Yeshiva boys school, while she has worked in the administration of Mosdoth Day Care Center.
When she once mentioned to the Rebbe that parnasa (livelihood) was tough, the Rebbe reminded her: “Der aibishter hut dir gebenshet mit gutte kinder (the Almighty has blessed you with good children).”
The hunger she felt during her youth, with people she knew dying from lack of nourishment, led her to keep an open door policy at her home on Montgomery St.
At any given time she could be found in the kitchen, sharing a good word with a family member or guest, but more importantly perhaps, serving a plate of delicious homemade food.
“Her heart and her kitchen were always open,” a relative told COLlive. “She was a very truthful person, had great hachnosas orchim and was loved by all who knew her.”
She is survived by her husband Rabbi Tzvi Abba Lerman, their children Mrs. Rikva Kaminker, Mrs. Miriam Gurary, Rabbi Mendel Lerman, R’ Gershon Lerman, all of Crown Heights, Shliach Rabbi Yosef Lerman – Norcross, GA, Mrs. Nechama Dina Futerfas – Crown Heights and Shlucha Chaya Baila Friedman of S. Cruz, CA; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her twin brother R’ Peretz Feigenson, head of the Torah classes network of the Lubavitch Youth Organization in New York.
The levaya will be held on Wednesday, leaving Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park at 10:00 AM and passing by 770 Eastern Parkway at 10:45 AM for burial in the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens.
The family will be sitting Shiva at 814 Montgomery Street, Brooklyn.

At the time I visited Mrs. Lerman in New York, her son Rabbi Lerman was my Rabbi.
I remember her warmth and kindness. She treated me like family, When she knew I wouild be at the airport for awhile she lovingly packed a lunch for me. May all of the family be comforted among the other mourners of Zion.
Even though I never knew Mrs. Lerman, I have the honor of knowing some of her children. The kindness, eidelkeit, hospitality, and genuine caring for all Yidden shines through her children and is a credit to her. May her memory be kept alive through her family and all who knew her, and may it be very soon that all who passed on should be reunited with their families with T’chias Hameisim and the revelation of Moshiach and Geulah.

Mrs. Lerman was a true Eishes Chayil. She was a devoted mother and wife. I remember how she treated her parents with the greatest love and respect. Her home was always warm, beautiful and filled with a yiddishe atmosphere and love. She took care of every guest as if they were her own family. I have very fond memories of spending many good occasions in her home. She was regal and beautiful. May her family be comforted at this difficult time.
