The Sheffield Jewish Community in England marked 20 years of public Menorah lightings in the city.
Attended by the Lord Mayor Councillor Dr Sylvia Dunkley and Consort her husband Dr John Dunkley, the Chief Constable Mr Joe Dyson and Mrs Dyson and many members of the Sheffield community and beyond, the veteran Menorah was lit in the Peace Gardens adjacent to the Sheffield Town Hall.
Rabbi Yoinosson Golomb welcomed all present and through the office of the Lord Mayor thanked the city for its record of celebrating the Jewish faith by storing and erecting the Menorah over the last 2 decades.
“The Menorah represents the triumph of good over evil, freedom over oppression lightness over darkness,” said Rabbi Golomb, “and Sheffield has demonstrated its contribution to that message.”
The Lord Mayor responded by thanking the community for inviting her and acknowledging the city’s agreement with “the spirit of tolerance that the Menorah represents, particularly in a multicultural city like Sheffield.”
After the Lord Mayor lit the Shamash, Rabbi Golomb climbed the ladder to make the brochos and light the menorah after which hot doughnuts and latkes were enjoyed by all.
