Pre-Purim fun and excitement began at Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah of Melbourne, Australia as soon as the month of Adar began.
Festivities and music rang through the campuses each morning as the adage “Mishenichnas Adar Marbim B’Simcha” – that we should increase our joy during this month – was put into play.
Along with Hamentastchen baking activities, gragger making and a clown and jumping castle on-site, an array of crazy and fun dress-up days were arranged during Adar and students were encouraged to attend in their funniest hats, craziest socks, wackiest hairstyles and snazziest shoes!
This hive of Purim preparation culminated on Purim day with a vibrant school environment, creative costumes, and lots of excited students.
Despite Purim occurring on a Sunday this year, students were enthusiastic to attend. Incredibly, the Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah campuses hosted over 15 megillah readings for students across the 5 school campuses on Purim morning.
Additionally, in line with the family and community-minded nature of Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah, several megillah readings were open for parents and extended family to attend. The lively atmosphere in the classrooms and shuls was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
In addition to a public megillah reading, the Gurewicz Early Learning Centre provided much-welcome opportunity for parents to mingle and enjoy a supplied barrista cappuccino and hamantaschen.
The Purim morning program across the YBR campuses was punctuated by singing, dancing, costume parades and spirited fun, alongside fulfilling mitzvot of Purim whereby students revelled in the joy of exchanging Mishloach Manot parcels (prepared at school) with their friends, giving Matanot L’evyonim (tzedakah for those in need).
Instilling the importance of Tzedakah (charity) in our students is paramount, and monies raised by Yeshivah – Beth Rivkah students in the lead up to Purim were distributed on Purim day. The Purim spirit will continue on Shushan Purim with entertainers and fun activities marking the day.
