Friendship Circle of Michigan has only a few days to widen its Internet social network to grab a 7-figure gift that could boost services for special-needs children.
The Jewish nonprofit is has vaulted into the top tier of the race, making them eligible for a $1 million grant from the Chase bank.
And they’ve done it by tapping their Facebook fans, 24498 of whom have voted for Friendship Circle. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, they ranked No. 5 in the nationwide contest.
Volunteers are working around the clock, heatedly texting, e-mailing, blogging, Tweeting and messaging as many people as possible, urging them to vote in the Chase Community Giving.
Chassidic reggae musician Matisyahu Miller and Jewish businesswoman and socialite Ivanka Trump have both asked their Twitter followers (1,221,714 and 688,799, respectively) to vote.
“We’re just driving everyone crazy,” said Bassie Shemtov, the Friendship Circle director. “It’s very intense.”
If Friendship Circle wins the grant, Shemtov said it hopes to launch a national initiative and expand Ferber Kaufman LifeTown, its 23,000 square-foot facility housing a therapy and activity center, as well as the Weinberg Village, both in West Bloomfield.
Those groups, including Friendship Circle, are continuously taking Facebook votes through 11:59 p.m. Friday, when the charity with the most votes is expected to be named the grant winner. The rest of the top five is expected to take about $100,000.
