Adults and children gathered for Chanukah activities at Chabad of Indiana which included using over 1,000 Legos to construct a more than 10 feet tall Lego menorah.
The activities, organized by Indianapolis Shliach Rabbi Avi Grossbaum, also included candle-dipping and making olive oil.
Kids oohed and ahhed as Grossbaum poured a thin stream of oil from his creaky wooden olive press and then spun it through a centrifuge to separate out the water.
But even a centrifuge couldn’t top the Lego menorah, which stood more than 10 feet tall.
“We put a lot of effort into it,” reported Evan Kenyon, 11.
It was Lubavitch Indiana’s second Lego menorah, said Rabbi Grossbaum, “but I think this is the tallest.”
Kids split into groups to construct parts of the giant Lego column that comprised the menorah’s base. Eleven-year-old Eliana Frankel, who became one group’s impromptu foreman, reported that her workers cooperated well. The children got along due to — or perhaps despite — the fact that the group included several brothers and sisters.
“I supervised the kids and helped them be able to share,” Eliana said, “It was pretty easy because they were all nice to each other.”
