Russia’s chief rabbi says he will travel to western Ukraine to show support for a local Jewish community where the city mayor faces criminal charges for anti-Semitic behavior.
Prosecutors have charged Uzhhorod Mayor Serhiy Ratushnyak with hooliganism and racist behavior after he attacked a campaign activist for presidential hopeful Arseniy Yatsenyuk last month.
The mayor called Yatsenyuk “an impudent little Jew” and said he is confusing the January presidential vote with small town elections in Israel, according to Yatsenyuk.
Russia’s chief rabbi Berel Lazar condemned the mayor’s actions Thursday as a sign of persistent anti-Semitism and said he would visit Uzhorod next week in a show of support.

Not because we lack the means of prevailing or because of timorousness, but because we must consecrate all our strength exclusively to strengthening our own structure, the edifice of Torah and mitzvot performed in holiness and purity. To this we must devote ourselves utterly, with actual mesirat nefesh,1 not merely with potential mesirat nefesh.
