Moishy’s rebbe could not have imagined the thoughts bubbling in his mind; he had suffered more bullying than he could handle. He was bright enough but he stuttered and hated to speak out loud.
“Moishy, you are a smart boy, what’s the answer?” Moishy just stared ahead. He could hear some of tormentors begin to snicker and was not going to accommodate them with a reason to tease him at recess. It was Yechezkel who told the rebbe that Moishy was being teased and bullied and he was at a total loss as to what to do to help Moishy.
Chaim too watched the scene, happy that he was being passed up. He had trouble concentrating and relied on his sharp wit to get along at school. He was thinking about his cousin who left yeshiva at 17 and found a job. He was thinking that he could not wait until he could get away from all this and start to make money.
These are not isolated cases, they represent children in every class in every yeshiva. Every teacher in Chabad schools today wants to devote his best talents in educating his students and bringing out the best in them. The greatest challenge today is to communicate in a way that reaches young hearts and builds a strong bond between pupil and educator.
We talk to our children all the time; are they listening? How can any educator be sure in addition to skills and content, children are not just listening but are actually hearing what we are saying? Is there any way an educator can be more perceptive of where he stands with his students?
Addressing this mode of communication will be Rabbi Avrohom Segal, educational director of Machon Kivunim in Israel, an outstanding Chassidic educational consultant. Rabbi Segal who has fomented a veritable revolution in Israel will be one of the main presenters at the Kinus. Rabbi Segal has developed an amazingly successful and powerful series of films and presentations on the art of communication.
Through his thesis – current problems can be eliminated by effective dialog between pupils and parents or educators – he has impacted audiences from Kfar Chabad to Los Angeles in an unprecedented way. Rabbi Segal will show Kinus Conference attendees some of his presentations; he will lecture, conduct a workshop and hold a round-table discussion on the subject of communication.
