In light of the recent tragedies, Cleveland’s oldest congregation, Zemach Zedek, headed by Rabbi and Mrs. Kazen and Rabbi Osher Kravitsky, held special Chanukah outreach activities with the underlying theme of ‘Kindling the Torches of Humanity.”
Throughout the entire eight days of Chanukah, a grand Chanukah Menorah was kindled at Downtown Cleveland’s Public Square. A public ceremony was held, at which the Mayor of Cleveland, Frank G. Jackson, officially declared “Cleveland is now a city of light” before kindling the Shamash of the grand Menorah.
Despite the bitter cold weather, the attendance was high. After the lighting the mayor actually danced with the large crowd to ‘al ha Nissim.’
Throughout Chanukah a 25 Ft Menorah mobile was making its round around town handing out hundreds Menorah kits, guides, draidles, and jelly donuts and spreading the Chanukah spirit. Hundreds lit the Menorah on the Menorah Mobile.
Organizers of the program were Yaakov Jacobs, Dovid Kotlarsky, and Perets Kazen.
