This year’s Spectacular Spectacular Recital by Gymies took place Wednesday June 12th and Thursday June 13th at the Jewish Children’s Museum.
It truly was a magical event. 275 kids, from 46 weekly classes, performed in 7 shows in two days. Professional lighting and sound set the stage, with the children putting in months or even years of practice leading up to this year’s showing.
“Tonight was truly magical, and knowing that we enabled kids to shine tonight is the ultimate in satisfaction. It’s what Gymies is all about, and I am so proud of my team for pulling it off,” said Sarah Benarroch, Founding Director of Gymies on President Street.
“This year we really took the performance aspect of our programming to a new level. In the past we have hosted in-house recitals and the response was always great. But we were looking for a way to showcase the raw talent and success us teachers see in our students every day, and I think we found it.”
As part of Gymies’ redefined mission, it will now be hosting two shows per year, one at Chanukah and one at year’s end. Their goals here are diverse, but all equally important.
“We want our kids to shine,” said Benarroch. “We want younger students to see what they have to look forward to. We want parents to know that their kids are spending their one to two hours a week at Gymies learning very real skills. And we want our kids to see that all the work they put in has an end goal, with a measurable result. Tonight accomplished all that and more. I know these kids will be riding the wave of this performance for a while.”
Two special groups also performed, the Gymnastics squad and the Advanced Beginner Ballet team. These groups not only performed in their class’ regular scheduled shows, but also as part of the finale in every show.
“These special kids have been coming to Gymies for 10+ consecutive sessions over four years time,” explained Benarroch. “Their parents had the foresight to have their kids stay consistent with one program, session to session, and put their faith in he Gymies team to deliver. It was so gratifying to see our philosophy on success at work, and the clear sense of pride in these girls as they took the stage night after night. Personally these shows were particularly meaningful, and I believe will be a big part of the Gymies journey in the long-run. And perhaps equally meaningfully, our Spectacular Spectacular shows that there is now an avenue for the talent of our kids to shine through within our community.”
Gymies is home to after-school recreational, and now performance based, classes in Gymnastics, Ballet, Tap and Martial Arts as well as our Educational Department that hosts our Movement based Preschool for 2’s and 3’s (new age!) as well as a full blown summer camp for ages 2-5 years and 8-12’s.

..as part of the school program. This and learning music, art, cooking, sewing, drama etc etc.. All of this could be learnt in a way that instills Torah and Chassidic values. It is not a contradiction but instead enhances the kids self-esteem and brings out skills and talents that make him or her feel that htey have something to contribute to society. When oh when will schools get this message?
