What if you found out about a quick and easy thing that you already do has secret power? What if you discovered that by simply pairing two things together, you could unlock tremendous force on High? What if you landed upon the perfect opportunity to give the Rebbe a birthday gift coming from Yud Aleph Nissan by following a personal request from the Rebbe?
Who wouldn’t jump on such an opportunity?
Well, as it turns out, the opportunity is sitting right there, ready for anyone to take advantage of it.
In a seminal talk on 18 Elul 5745 (1985) that was subsequently edited by the Rebbe himself and printed in Likutei Sichos, the Rebbe suggested something as innovative as it is simple: to pair together the twin powers of tzedakah and saying Tehillim.
Noting that Jews have always said Tehillim during times of distress, the Rebbe pointed out that it only makes sense to maximize the impact and double it up with giving tzedakah as well. The navi Daniel expressed so long ago that, “Our sins are redeemed with tzedakah.” Just imagine the double power on High when a Jew gives money to tzedaka along with his or her heartfelt words of Tehillim!
A new initiative titled “Kapital and Coin” has been launched to raise awareness of this unique opportunity. One of the first frontiers are the schools for children—and it’s taken off like fire. Digital pushkas created specifically for this initiative have been installed in many Lubavitch schools.
“Every day, we say the Rebbe’s kapital and kapital 20 at a dedicated time during class,” said Rabbi Katz, a first-grade teacher in United Lubavitch Yeshivah for over thirty years. “Then the children line up and each put a coin in the pushka. It’s very exciting for them to see the numbers tally up on the digital screen of the pushka. They get to see the amount increase each day, readily seeing how it quickly adds up.”
“The really nice thing about it is that every so often, when it reaches a certain benchmark, Kapitol and Coin matches our tzedakah and we receive a cash card to purchase supplies for the class. It’s become an integral part of our day, and the children are eager to fulfill this special hora’ah of the Rebbe.”
Many highlight the fact that towards the conclusion of this sichah, the Rebbe used extraordinary language that possibly has no counterpart. In the Rebbe’s words: “May it be Hashem’s will that this heartfelt proposal coming from the core of the soul will be accepted gladly and will circulate everywhere.” These words, “le’vavis ve’nafshis,” demonstrate a deep, emotional, and loving request from the Rebbe to us—for our own good.
“It’s especially gratifying to see how much this long-forgotten bakashah le’vavis ve’nafshis is being implemented by chassidishe children in our schools,” said Rabbi Naftali Shanowitz, Associate Director at Kapital and Coin. “By simply sending someone into the classroom and showing them what it’s all about, the response has Baruch Hashem been very enthusiastic. All it takes is just one more kapital, one more coin, and then Mashiach will finally be here!”
As our loving father, the Rebbe gifted us with something that’s remarkably simple and powerful at the same time. At this point, all we have to do is to simply act on it. And there’s no better time than these days just after Yud Aleph Nissan to do it! So go ahead GIVE some tzedaka and SAY The Rebbe’s Kapital Tehillim—and do them at the same time. With Hashem’s help, the brachos will surely flow from there.
