A new Torah was welcomed at the Chabad House of Kansas City recently, the first big event marking the 40-year anniversary of the regional headquarters of the Chabad in Missouri and Kansas, led by Rabbi Sholom and Bluma Wineberg.
Over 250 people joined for the completion of the Torah which was followed by a parade and dancing through the streets.
Sofer Stam Rabbi Feitel Levin of New York completed the final 150 letters of the new Torah scroll which was written in Israel.
Relatives of the late David Waldman commissioned the Torah for the Chabad House, and it was dedicated in his memory.
“He was a wonderful individual who passed away about a year ago at 99 years old,” said Chabad House Program Director Rabbi Mendy Wineberg.
“His first yahrzeit is on the 8th of Iyar, the day after Shavuos, and our goal was to have the Torah completed by the first yahrzeit. We wanted to be able to dedicate it before Shavuos so we could read the Ten Commandments from the Torah, because that is what the holiday is all about.”
“It is truly fitting that we launch ‘Celebration 40’ with the dedication of a new Torah,” added Rabbi Wineberg.
“Chabad’s mission is to raise Jewish awareness, pride and identity, and the Torah is both the symbol of Judaism and what has kept the Jewish nation and our identity intact for over 3,000 years.”
