Justice Elyakim Rubinstein, former Vice President of the Supreme Court of Israel and the Attorney General of Israel from 1997 to 2004, recently had a unique encounter with 2 Chabad bochurim at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.
Rubinstein was at the U.N. as part of an International Mock Trial on Human Rights on Ernst Rüdin, a psychiatrist, geneticist, and eugenicist who was considered the father of Nazi Racial Hygiene and responsible for many deaths during the 1930s and 40s, according to europeantimes.news.
Rüdin died in Munich, Germany on October 22, 1952, but his case was discussed as part of an educational program for young leaders partaking in the 2023 Holocaust Remembrance under the UN Outreach Programme on the Holocaust.
To his surprise, he met the bochurim Levi Yitzchak Lapidus and Shneor Zalmen Halperin, who offered to study the Rebbe‘s discourse Bosi Legani together. Rubinstein is known to be a subscriber of the weekly Torah learning booklet Dvar Malchus and studies Chassidic teachings.
Rubinstein met the Rebbe 33 years ago while serving as an advisor to Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir. The Rebbe and him spoke for a while about the security of Israel.
Rubinstein happily agreed and studied with the bochurim to the amusement of the people seated around.
Later, Rubinstein commented how “Chabad is everywhere” and spoke about the dedication of the Chassidim to the Rebbe. “The Rebbe orders any of them to go to Guatemala, China or any other place and they obey immediately,” he commented. He added that the Rebbe’s Mazkir Rabbi Binyomin Klein OBM was “a good friend.”
