Over 100 people from all walks of life braved the below-freezing temperatures on the third night of Chanukah to participate in the Grand Menorah Lighting at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul.
The 60 MPH gale-force winds that had pervaded the area toppled the large menorah, but could not dampen the spirits of the crowd, who resiliently joined in lighting the smaller, wind-proof menorah.
Joining the celebration was Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Stras, the first and only Jewish justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
In his remarks before lighting the candles on the Chanukah Menorah, Justice Stras mentioned his pride in participating in an open display of Judaism at the State Capitol, and contrasted it with the persecution that his grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, endured.
Minnesota Head Shliach Rabbi Moshe Feller delivered the Rebbe’s Chanukah message – that a little bit of light can drive away much darkness.
Shliach Rabbi Mendel Feller, who emceed the event, also shared a Chanukah message from the Rebbe – that we must always be increasing in light.
Delicious Chanukah donuts were served, and Chanukah Gelt, both real and chocolate, was distributed to the children in attendance.
The Menorah lighting was followed by the annual St. Paul Menorah Parade, with over 30 vehicles spreading the miracle of Chanukah throughout the city.
nice the main you had great time in the cold haha
What isn’t mentioned in the article is that Rabbi Mayer Rubinfeld put together this whole event single-handedly for the entire community (as well as the other Chanukah events). I don’t live in MN anymore, but feel that this should be mentioned. Sometimes the behind the scenes people don’t get thanked like they should but this wouldn’t have happened without his hard work!
go rabbi mendel and his father. you both should live and be well
Three generations of Rabbis Feller with the Chief Justice –

Rabbi Mayer Rubinfeld is incredible!! He organized this and other events throughout Chanukah single handedly!!! We are so lucky to have him in S. Paul!!
Thank you to the unstoppable Rabbi Mayer Rubinfeld for organizing and pulling together this fun event. Every year Mayer spends days calling dignitaries and working out the logistics. Thank you, Mayer!!!!
