The auspicious day of Hei Teves was celebrated at the Lubavitcher Yeshiva of Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, NY, with singing, dancing, and various special treats throughout the day for the talmidim.
The biggest surprise of all was the Rebbe’s library coming to visit the yeshiva in the form of Rabbi Avram Berns, who is a former student himself.
An avid collector of antique Judaica, Rabbi Berns had the merit to be a librarian for many years in the Agudas Chassidei Chabad Library. He brought with him a number of rare seforim and historic artifacts to share with the boys.
Rabbi Berns had the talmidim mesmerized as he spoke about his job as a librarian and the awesome responsibility of cataloging and taking pictures of the many gifts and seforim that were either gifted or acquired.
The talmidim were able to hold and say a perek tehillim from a sefer close to 500 years old. To see a page written prior to the printing of the Rambam and a letter from Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried, author of kitzur Shulchan Aruch excited the talmidim.
The boys continued speaking about the experience long after Rabbi Berns left, said Rabbi Shmuel Dechter, Dean of United Lubavitcher Yeshiva.
“But the proof of the excitement that was felt in the building were the complaints as to why he didn’t visit their class as well,” he added.
