Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, the Rebbe’s secretary and Chairman of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and Machne Israel, relates that the Rebbe would strongly encourage participation in the Maos Chittim Fund and would review the names of the recipients. Oftentimes, the Rebbe would urge that more funds be raised so that all requests for assistance be fulfilled.
The Rebbe’s clarion call to leave no request unfulfilled continues to energize Machne Israel and its donors today. As hundreds of thousands of our Jewish brothers and sisters endure privation in Eretz Yisrael—and as many more struggle with the spike in the cost of living around the world—Machne Israel’s Maos Chittim Fund will be needed more than ever this year.
To a group of students who had sent a donation to the fund in 1962 the Rebbe wrote, “The mitzvah of Maos Chittim is, of course, one of the highest forms of tzedakah, and it will stand you in good stead. Your active share in it gives me the certain hope that also in all other mitzvot you show the same degree of devotion, and that you fulfill them with hiddur and joy …”
As we prepare to sit with our loved ones around the Seder table, we must remember that our joy can be complete only when we are sure that our brethren have the wherewithal to celebrate Pesach as well.
